Houston, you have a WNBA team.
The WNBA and NBA officially approved the sale of the Connecticut Sun to Houston Rockets owner Tilman J. Fertitta on Wednesday. The team will relocate to Houston for the 2027 season and be renamed the Houston Comets, after the city’s original WNBA franchise.
The first edition of the Comets was one of the league’s original eight franchises and played from 1997 to 2008 before disbanding. The Comets won four WNBA titles from 1997 to 2000, which remains tied for the most championships by any team in league history.
The Sun have played in Connecticut since 2003, winning two conference titles in 2004 and 2005. In 2025, the Sun missed the playoffs with an 11-33 record.
ESPN’s Alexa Philippou reported in March that the sale price for the franchise is $300 million.
