Edmonton city council is set to receive an administration report this week on $262.8 million in city funding paid to 1,351 recipients, including a jump in money directed by council itself, Taproot Edmonton reported.
The report is on the agenda for council’s non-regular meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 14, according to Taproot Edmonton’s summary of the agenda. Canada News Media could not open the city’s agenda document and is relying on Taproot’s account of it, so the figures should be treated as developing.
Of the total, $137 million went to civic agencies, boards and commissions as operating subsidies, and $125.8 million went to individuals and outside organizations, Taproot reported.
Funding that council directs itself, which bypasses the city’s internal program funding process, rose to $20.1 million in 2025 from $7.4 million in 2024, nearly triple, Taproot reported. More than $10 million of the 2025 amount went to Qualico for publicly accessible private spaces in its Station Lands development, the outlet said.
This is only the second year recipients have had to report outcomes, and many are still developing their performance measures, Taproot reported.
The report is separate from council’s special meeting on Friday, Oct. 16, when councillors are to discuss the province’s Oct. 8 directive ordering Edmonton to return to its pre-2024 zoning rules. Mayor Andrew Knack has said the meeting will test whether council wants to make a public statement on local autonomy, Taproot reported.
Council is also scheduled to hold a public hearing on Tuesday, Oct. 13, on rezoning applications in Ritchie, Westmount and McKernan, Taproot reported.
