The Montreal Alouettes beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 33-23 in the CFL East Division final on Saturday in Montreal and will play in the 113th Grey Cup on Nov. 15 in Calgary.
Quarterback Davis Alexander passed for 373 yards and two touchdowns, and Tyrice Beverette forced a late fumble that turned the game, The Canadian Press reported.
With about 3:50 left and Winnipeg trailing by three, Beverette sacked quarterback Zach Collaros at Montreal’s 34-yard line, forced a fumble and recovered it himself, The Canadian Press said. Alexander then finished an eight-play drive with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Snead with 1:11 remaining.
Receiver Tyson Philpot, the CFL’s most outstanding Canadian, caught nine passes for 129 yards for Montreal, which finished the regular season with a league-best 14-4 record, according to The Canadian Press. Montreal kicker Jose Maltos Diaz made all four of his field goal attempts.
Collaros returned from a rib injury to complete 21 of 27 passes for 228 yards. Running back Brady Oliveira ran for 105 yards on 14 carries. The Bombers entered the playoffs as a crossover team after finishing fourth in the West at 9-9, and The Canadian Press reported that none of the previous 14 crossover teams had advanced to the Grey Cup.
The Alouettes will play the winner of Saturday night’s West final between the Edmonton Elks and B.C. Lions at McMahon Stadium, The Canadian Press said. That game had not been played when this story was published.
