Art and jewelry sale supports Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre – The Kingston Whig-Standard

KINGSTON — With several centimetres of snow expected to fall before the weekend, the Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre is hoping Kingston residents will still venture out to the Frontenac Mall on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to check out its 15th annual Art and Jewelry Sale.

The event is one of the most important fundraisers of the year for the local animal rehabilitation centre, which has to pay for its operations without government assistance.

“We are limited in the number of first-party fundraisers that we throw every year, and this one is put on by our volunteers. We are very fortunate to have a good base of supporters who donate jewelry and art to us all year long,” Leah Birmingham, assistant director, explained. “We get all the valuable stuff appraised and then come up with a rock-bottom price for them. So you can get really high-quality items for a very reasonable price.”

The wildlife centre takes in injured and orphaned animals from across eastern Ontario and rehabilitates them so they can be reintroduced into the wild. Currently, the facility is caring for 163 animals from 33 different species and sees about 5,000 animals come through its doors every year.

“We see all kinds of species. We see all the wild mammals that you see in Ontario. We see birds of prey, water birds, songbirds, also amphibians and reptiles,” Birmingham said.

Some of the most notable patients at the centre include an opossum that was struck by a car and had 12 babies in her pouch. Both mother and babies are alive and doing well.

The facility also saw its first bobcat come in. It had been struck by a car and had head trauma. Fortunately, it was treated and quickly released back into its territory, which will increase the odds of its survival.

In past years, the art and jewelry sale has brought in as much $16,000 to help pay for the costs of taking care of animals such as these. Because the event is volunteer-run, all of the money raised will go to operating expenses at the wildlife centre.

The sale this weekend will be taking place inside a storefront donated by Frontenac Mall management. Birmingham admits they are worried that the expected heavy snowfall might put a serious dent in this year’s sales, but hopes people will still come out to support a worthy cause.

“It’s been a very busy winter, and we have a lot of patients to look after,” she said.
