Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada has extended its temporary measures for Haitian and Sudanese nationals in Canada who cannot return home, with the updated measures now running to Dec. 30, 2027.
The department announced the update in an Oct. 27 notice. The previous measures were set to expire that day.
IRCC described the extension as targeted. People who hold a valid work permit issued under the earlier temporary measures can apply to extend it, and standard processing fees apply.
People who want to extend their visitor status or a study permit can apply through IRCC’s existing channels, which are linked from the notice.
The notice does not set out new eligibility groups. Anyone unsure whether they qualify should read the notice and the IRCC application pages, or speak with a licensed immigration consultant or a lawyer. This article is not legal advice.
The update comes as the federal government reworks rules for people already in the country. Canada News Media has reported on how unfinished asylum claims will face new questions after Nov. 2, and on the Express Entry job-offer points change that takes effect early in November.
