Canada Soccer confirmed that national team defender Derek Cornelius was taken to hospital after sustaining a non-contact lower body injury during a training session in Toronto on Wednesday, adding fresh uncertainty to an already short-handed CanMNT roster ahead of a three-match October window.
In a statement carried by TSN, Canada Soccer said, “Derek was transported to a local hospital, where he is receiving medical care and undergoing further assessment.” The exact nature and severity of the injury had not been disclosed as of Thursday.
Cornelius, 28, is a centre-back from Ajax, Ontario, who has made 48 appearances for Canada and scored his lone international goal in a 2025 friendly against Wales. He is in his third season with Olympique Marseille in France’s Ligue 1, following a career that included a stint with the Vancouver Whitecaps and a loan spell with Rangers in Scotland. He featured for Canada at this year’s World Cup but missed the round of 16 match against Morocco due to injury, and, per Canadian Soccer Daily, he suffered a serious muscle strain on international duty against Venezuela in November 2025.
The setback lands as Canada, coached by Jesse Marsch, prepares to face Chile at BMO Field on September 27, Peru at Montreal’s Stade Saputo on October 3, and the United States in St. Paul on October 6. The squad is already without captain Alphonso Davies and goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau for the window, according to CBC Sports, along with several other regulars. Midfielder Jamie Knight-Lebel was among the players called in to bolster the roster ahead of the Chile match.
Cornelius’s availability for the upcoming fixtures remains unclear pending further updates from the medical staff. Canada Soccer said it would provide additional information on his condition as it becomes available.
