Environment Canada has issued snowfall warnings for southwestern Alberta, calling for 10 to 20 centimetres of heavy snow through Thursday morning, Oct. 29.
The warnings were issued at 3:14 p.m. MT Wednesday for the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass, including Coleman and Frank, as well as the M.D. of Pincher Creek, the M.D. of Ranchland, the Piikani Reserve and Waterton Lakes National Park and Blood Reserve 148A.
Environment Canada said upwards of 20 cm is expected, particularly near Crowsnest Pass and Waterton Lakes National Park. Lower-elevation communities such as Pincher Creek should see totals closer to 10 cm. Snow will continue tonight into Thursday and taper off Thursday morning.
The agency said roads and walkways will likely be difficult to navigate because of accumulating snow, and visibility will likely be reduced at times. It advised drivers to allow extra time for travel.
People can report severe weather to Environment Canada at [email protected], by calling 1-800-239-0484 or on social media using #ABStorm. Current alerts are posted on the Environment Canada weather alerts page.
The system is part of the same early-season snow that has hit other parts of the province. We reported on the snowfall warning for Fort McMurray and on Edmonton’s first big snowfall, where a special weather statement remains in place for the capital region until Thursday morning.
