HALIFAX — The Halifax Regional Municipality is asking residents to comment on a draft vision for the Mill Cove area and Bedford Waterfront, with an online forum opening Monday and an open house on Nov. 4.
The online forum runs from Monday, Oct. 26 to Friday, Nov. 13 at engagehalifax.ca/mill-cove, where residents can review the draft vision, guiding principles and planning objectives, the municipality said in a news release posted Oct. 21.
The public open house is Wednesday, Nov. 4 at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 95, 1772 Bedford Highway, in Bedford. The same information will be presented at each of three sessions: 10 a.m. to noon, 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8:30 p.m.
Regional council has designated Mill Cove an Urban Local Growth Centre, and the Province of Nova Scotia has named it a Suburban Opportunity Site. The municipality said those designations make the area a priority for transit-oriented development.
It said the future Mill Cove ferry terminal, along with a commitment to co-locate a new library, gives the area a chance to support a mixed-use, transit-oriented community.
The draft vision draws on feedback from the first phase of engagement and on technical analysis. Comments in this phase will help refine recommendations and inform future planning policy that goes to regional council for consideration.
The Bedford Basin shoreline has been in the news for other reasons lately, including the death of a Canadian Navy sailor after a boat capsized in the basin. Elsewhere in the region, the Oasis of the Seas was diverted to Halifax by a storm, and a rainfall warning covers Cape Breton.
