Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for the Sydney metro area, Cape Breton County, Richmond County and Guysborough County in Nova Scotia, with up to 30 millimetres of additional rain expected through Friday evening.
The agency said very heavy rain is continuing in the region, and that gusty winds with the rain may break tree branches. Local utility outages are possible, according to the Environment Canada warning, which was issued at about 4:30 a.m. Atlantic time on Friday, Oct. 23, 2026, and runs until about 8 p.m.
Rainfall warnings are issued when significant impacts are expected because of the amount of rain. Drivers in low-lying areas should watch for pooled water on roads, and residents can clear storm drains and gutters near their homes while it is safe to do so.
The rain is part of a stormy stretch for Atlantic Canada. Newfoundland is under wind warnings Friday, as we reported in Josephine brings wind warnings to Avalon, south coast, and the Prairies are dealing with snow and wind, covered in Up to 40 cm of snow for northern Sask., wind warnings south. Our Canada winter forecast for 2026-27 by region looks at what is ahead for the season.
This story will be updated if the warning is extended. Last checked 9:15 a.m. MT, Oct. 23, 2026.
