Hollywood icon Keanu Reeves recently offered a candid glimpse into his personal philosophy in a conversation with BBC News. The “Matrix” star, now 59, shared his contemplations on mortality, revealing that he thinks about death “all the time.” Rather than dwelling on the somber nature of the subject, Reeves emphasized a positive outlook, suggesting that contemplating mortality can deepen one’s appreciation for life.
A Creative Outlet
Amidst his personal reflections, Reeves has remained actively engaged in the world of entertainment. His latest venture is the debut novel, The Book of Elsewhere, co-authored with acclaimed science fiction writer China Miéville. The novel delves into themes of immortality, a subject that appears to resonate with the actor’s own contemplations.
Building upon the success of his comic book series, BRZRKR, Reeves is expanding his creative universe. Adaptations of BRZRKR into both an anime series and a live-action Netflix film are in the works, with Reeves set to star in the latter.

The action movie icon got emotional when thinking about his work on the Lilly and Lana Wachowski-directed franchise during a conversation on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Though he made an appearance to speak about his and China Miéville’s new novel, The Book of Elsewhere, his segment also saw him reliving fond memories from some of his most important projects. Reeves was able to recount fond memories of acting alongside Alex Winter in the Bill and Ted series and sharing a screen with the late Patrick Swayze in Point Break, but it’s The Matrix that left him speechless.
“The Matrix changed my life, and then over these years, it’s changed so many other people’s lives in really positive and great ways,” Reeves said after gathering himself. “As an artist, you hope for that when you get to do a film or tell a story. So when you say these years, the amount of people that I have met who have said to me and been touched by The Matrix in such a positive way… It’s the best.”
A Shadow Over Success
While Reeves’ career continues to flourish, his personal life has been marred by unfortunate incidents. In December 2023, his Los Angeles home was burglarized, with the thieves making off with a firearm. Although the actor was not present at the time, the incident undoubtedly caused significant distress. This marked the second time Reeves’ residence has been targeted, as he previously obtained a restraining order against an individual who repeatedly trespassed on his property.
Despite these challenges, Keanu Reeves remains a beloved figure in Hollywood, captivating audiences with his talent and genuine demeanor.
