Manchester City beat Brighton and Hove Albion 4-3 on penalties after the teams drew 2-2 in the League Cup on Wednesday night at the Etihad Stadium.
Brighton took the lead in the 30th minute through Malick Yalcouye, who scored from very close range into the bottom left corner after a pass from Georginio Rutter, according to ESPN’s match log. Mateo Kovacic levelled in the 40th minute with a right-footed shot from outside the box, set up by Phil Foden.
Rutter put Brighton back in front two minutes into the second half, finishing from the left side of the box after a pass from Jaouen Hadjam. City equalised again in the 72nd minute when Vitor Reis scored from a set piece delivered by Rayan Cherki.
Neither side found a winner in the remaining time, and the tie went to a shootout. City won it 4-3, a result confirmed by both ESPN and Sky Sports.
The shootout win came on a night of tight finishes. Liverpool beat Chelsea 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, and Fleetwood Town stunned Arsenal on penalties following a 1-1 draw. Bournemouth, who beat Manchester United 3-0 on the weekend, followed that with a 3-0 win over Aston Villa on Wednesday.
The scorers, assists and minutes are taken from ESPN’s match log, and the score and shootout result have been confirmed by Sky Sports. Details of the individual penalties and City’s next fixture were not confirmed by both sources at the time of publication.
