Is the Marshall Acton III worth it?
The Acton III is Marshall’s smallest home speaker. According to the listing, tweeters are angled outwards and the waveguides were updated to give a wider soundstage than the previous Acton, with a two-way driver system that pairs crisp treble with controlled bass. Dynamic Loudness adjusts the tonal balance so music sounds even at low and high volume, and Placement Compensation corrects for nearby walls and shelves.
It is a speaker for people who want to tweak the sound with physical dials rather than a menu. It is not a smart speaker. There is no Wi-Fi, voice assistant or multi-room system, so it will not replace a Sonos for whole-home audio. If you mostly want music from a phone or laptop with great looks and a strong sound for the money, the design is aimed squarely at you.

What do owners say about the Acton III?
The Canadian reviews we read on the listing were strongly positive. Of the 2,687 ratings, 84 per cent are five stars and 12 per cent are four stars. One buyer used it for a large-room Zoom lecture and said it carried clearly through a space about 40 by 20 feet, and another who uses it in an office said it stays silent when idle, with none of the faint hum some plug-in speakers have. Several praised the solid dials, the classic Marshall look and how fast Bluetooth pairing was.
The complaints were consistent. Owners said the factory sound is bass heavy and that the app’s settings help. One reviewer said the sound is less immersive than a Harman Kardon Aura but more detailed. Others noted there is no way to link two Acton III speakers for a wider stereo field, and one said it is a better fit for lively music than for soft, quiet listening. Bluetooth connectivity drew mixed comments in Amazon’s review summary.
Marshall Acton III vs Marshall Stanmore III
The step up is the Stanmore III at $529.98, shipped and sold by Amazon.ca, with a 4.6-star rating from 930 ratings. The listing gives 80 W maximum output and a size of 18.8 by 35 by 20.29 cm at 4.3 kg, so it is a bigger box with more output than the Acton III. It costs $150 more.
Pick the Acton III for a desk, a shelf or a small living room. Pick the Stanmore III if you have a larger room and want more output. Check Marshall’s spec pages for both before you decide.

Who should skip the Acton III?
Skip it if you want Wi-Fi, AirPlay, voice control or multi-room audio, if you need a battery speaker for the beach or the backyard, or if you plan to build a stereo pair. It also costs $379.98, so it is a lot to pay if you only want background music for a kitchen.
Is there a cheaper alternative?
If you want smart features, the Sonos Era 100 is $289.00 on Amazon.ca, shipped and sold by Amazon.ca, about $90 less than the Acton III. It has a 4.5-star rating from 2,699 ratings. Sonos lists Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and AirPlay 2, and says two can be paired for stereo or surround. It has no tone dials and a different look.
For a desk setup on a tight budget, the Edifier R1280T is $149.98 on Amazon.ca, sold by Edifier Online Store and shipped by Amazon, with a 4.6-star rating from 18,541 ratings. It is a pair of powered bookshelf speakers rated at 42 W RMS in the listing title, so it needs more space than a single Acton III.
