Connor McDavid scored twice and added three assists as the Edmonton Oilers beat the Utah Mammoth 6-2 at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City on Saturday, according to the NHL’s official game summary.
The five-point night extended McDavid’s season-opening point streak to eight games, after he entered the game with points in all seven of Edmonton’s games, NHL.com reported before the game. He now has six goals and 17 assists, according to the league’s game data.
“Oilers vs Mammoth” drew more than 20,000 searches in Canada on Saturday, and McDavid’s name also trended, according to Google Trends.
McDavid opened the scoring 40 seconds into the game, with assists from Leon Draisaitl and Vasily Podkolzin. Zach Hyman scored his first goal of the season on a power play at 13:21 of the first period, with McDavid and Podkolzin assisting, and Mathieu Joseph made it 3-0 just 32 seconds later, the NHL summary shows.
Kasperi Kapanen and Draisaitl scored in the second period, both set up by McDavid, as Edmonton built a 5-0 lead. Utah starter Karel Vejmelka allowed five goals on 17 shots before being replaced by Sebastian Cossa, who stopped three of four shots.
John Marino and Mikhail Sergachev scored 95 seconds apart early in the third period for Utah, but McDavid restored the four-goal lead at 10:17, according to the summary. Tristan Jarry made 26 saves for Edmonton, which was outshot 28-21.
The win was a quick response for the Oilers, who lost 4-2 to the Mammoth at Rogers Place on Thursday when Clayton Keller scored twice, Edmonton’s first regulation loss of the season. Saturday’s game completed a home-and-home series between the clubs, NHL.com said. Hyman was among several Oilers who could return from injury for the rematch, according to pre-game reports.
McDavid has been on a tear all season, including a four-point game in a 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings earlier this month.
