St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital (STEGH) declared an outbreak of COVID-19 on the fifth floor Acute Medicine Unit.

The move came after three patients tested positive for the virus.

“This is our first outbreak which speaks to the exceptional attention of our Infection Prevention and Control Measures over the past 22 months as we have managed a high volume of COVID,” STEGH President and CEO, Karen Davies, said in a statement.

On Friday, the hospital closed the unit to essential caregivers.

The hospital said that it is working closely with the Southwestern Public Health Unit to monitor the situation and conduct contact tracing and testing.
