OTTAWA – Linus Ullmark made 20 saves and Shane Pinto scored the only shootout goal as the Ottawa Senators beat the New York Islanders 2-1 on Thursday night at Canadian Tire Centre.
Ridly Greig scored in regulation for Ottawa (6-2-0), which has won four of its past five games. Matias Maccelli replied for New York (3-3-1) with 12 seconds left in the first period. Semyon Varlamov stopped 18 shots in the loss, NHL.com reported.
Maccelli stole the puck from Pinto just inside the blue line, skated to the top of the right circle and beat Ullmark glove side with a wrist shot. It extended his point streak to five games, in which he has two goals and four assists.
Greig tied it at 15:43 of the second period. Artem Zub started the play with a stretch pass to Warren Foegele at the blue line, and Foegele skated in on a 2-on-1 before sending a saucer pass to Greig, who beat Varlamov over the blocker with a one-timer. Foegele was credited with the assist.
Each team had a goal taken off the board in the opening period. Foegele’s apparent goal at 4:50 was waved off after video review showed the puck hit the crossbar after glancing off Varlamov’s shoulder. Stephen Halliday’s apparent goal for the Islanders at 11:54 was overturned on an offside challenge.
Both teams had a power play in overtime and neither scored, sending the game to a shootout, where Pinto scored the lone goal. The Senators have now won four of their past five, including a 4-1 win over the New Jersey Devils earlier this month and a late power-play win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Oct. 8.
