The Colleen Hoover adaptation Verity opened at No. 1 at the North American box office on the weekend of Oct. 2 to 4, 2026, earning an estimated $32.6 million, while Tom Cruise’s Digger debuted fourth with about $8 million.
That is roughly four times what the Cruise film made, and it came despite weak reviews. Box Office Pro reported that Verity holds a 33 per cent critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and a C+ CinemaScore from audiences, and it called the film “review-proof.” Domestic box office figures cover the United States and Canada together.
Box Office Pro said the film’s estimated opening included $4.5 million from Thursday previews and played in 3,510 theatres, an average of $9,293 a screen. Its global launch reached an estimated $62.6 million, with $30 million coming from 70 international markets, led by the U.K. at $4.5 million, Germany at $3.8 million, Brazil at $3.5 million and Australia at $3.1 million.
The final tally may differ slightly from the estimate. The chart at The Numbers, which tracks box office figures, lists Verity at $32,031,011 and Digger at $8,001,856 for the same weekend.
Verity, from Amazon MGM, stars Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, with Josh Hartnett, and is based on a Hoover novel, according to an AFP report published by Hurriyet Daily News. Box Office Pro said 78 per cent of the audience was female and that the largest age group was 25 to 34, at 38 per cent.
David A. Gross of the consultancy FranchiseRe Movies, quoted in the AFP report, said the opening was strong for its type. “The weekend figure is well above average for the genre, in spite of weak reviews and audience ratings,” Gross wrote.
Digger, a black comedy directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, stars Cruise as a powerful man who sets off a climate disaster and then tries to show he can save the world from it, according to AFP. Box Office Pro said Warner Bros. released the film in 3,321 theatres, with $1.2 million from Thursday previews and $2.1 million, or 26.3 per cent of its total, from IMAX screens.
Box Office Pro described the debut as Cruise’s lowest opening since Lions for Lambs, which made $6.7 million in 2007. Digger has earned an estimated $20 million worldwide, including $12 million from 74 overseas markets. Critics gave it 51 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes and audiences a C+ CinemaScore.
Gross said the numbers were decent for a black comedy, but that such films are usually small and Digger is a Cruise movie.
The rest of the top five, per AFP, was Sony’s Resident Evil at $12.5 million in its third weekend, Paramount’s Heart of the Beast, with Brad Pitt, at about $11 million, and Primetime, with Robert Pattinson, at $8 million. The Numbers put total weekend revenue at $98.7 million across 67 films. Box Office Pro put it at about $99 million, down 22.4 per cent from the previous weekend and up 18.9 per cent from the same weekend in 2025.
Two new releases arrive on Oct. 9. Box Office Pro said Sony’s The Social Reckoning, directed by Aaron Sorkin, is tracking for a low single-digit opening, compared with $22.4 million for The Social Network, and that Other Mommy, with Jessica Chastain, is tracking as high as $35 million. Tracking projections are estimates and often miss.
Streaming and television are also in the news this week: Ted Lasso season 4 ended Oct. 7 with no fifth season confirmed.
