Some time ago, a controversy arose around Oculus and Meta, or rather Facebook. It was announced that logging in to the Oculus account will only be possible through Facebook. Now the company has decided to rebrand, which is to connect the Oculus equipment even more with the entire meta-universe.
As you may have read above, the brand changes its name to Meta Quest. Where does this name come from? The meta, of course, comes from the parent company, and when it comes to Quest, this part is probably inspired by the well-known and popular Oculus Quest VR goggles (there is also the Oculus Quest 2 model).
The company announced this change on Twitter. The @oculus account no longer exists, and instead a @metaquestvr was created with the tweet “New name. Same mission, sprinkled with a corporate meme.
As a curiosity, it can be added that the Meta department dealing with virtual reality will also be called Meta Quest from now on, so after years (Meta, then known as Facebook, bought Oculus in 2014, and in 2018 it fully absorbed it into its structure) in fact, Oculus ceases to exist.
So far, this change is just a matter of branding. The already produced goggles will continue to be sold with the Oculus branding, and future models will probably already have the Meta branding. However, users treated this step as a harbinger of further problems and began ruthlessly mocking it in replies to the above-mentioned tweet.
There were so many negative votes that Meta decided to answer them. However, it is hard to expect that this response from any of the dissatisfied fans will calm down.
The change is actually cosmetic, but on the other hand, Oculus sounds great, and over the years it has gained sympathy with players due to the high quality of the equipment. Meta, however, is associated mostly negatively by many, so it is no wonder that this step irritated the fans of the brand.
Let me know what you think about all of this and whether you like the new name or prefer the old one!
