The time to service a snowblower is now, in early September, not the morning after the first storm. A pre-season tune-up comes down to five things: fresh fuel, an oil change, a spark plug inspection, a look at the belts and shear pins, and a clearance adjustment at the scraper bar and skid shoes. Small-engine dealers recommend booking tune-ups between August and October, because any later and the machine may not be ready before the first snowfall, and the shop queue at the first storm is long.
There is a second reason the timing matters. Gasoline begins to degrade in as little as 30 days, according to Briggs & Stratton, and fuel left sitting in a tank over the summer forms gum and varnish that clogs the carburettor and fuel lines. A snowblower that ran fine in March will very often refuse to start in December for that reason alone. Doing the work in September, while it is still comfortable to stand in the garage and while parts are in stock, is the difference between a 90-minute job and a two-week wait for a dealer appointment in January.
Before starting, find your operator’s manual and keep it beside you. Oil capacity, oil viscosity, shear pin size and skid shoe clearance all vary by model, and the figures below are typical rather than universal. If you do not have the paper copy, most manufacturers post manuals free online by model number. This guide covers routine owner maintenance on a gas snowblower. It does not cover carburettor rebuilds, gearbox repairs or electrical faults on electric-start models, and those are worth handing to an authorised dealer.
- Set up safely and disconnect the spark plug lead. Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated garage with the door open. Never run the engine in an enclosed space, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warns, because people have died of carbon monoxide poisoning doing exactly that. Put the machine on a level surface, then pull the spark plug wire off the plug so the engine cannot fire while your hands are near the auger.
- Get rid of last season’s fuel. If gas has been sitting in the tank since spring, siphon it out rather than trying to run it off. Refill with fresh unleaded gasoline rated 87 octane or higher, and avoid anything above 10 per cent ethanol, which Cub Cadet Canada says can cause hard starting, reduced performance and engine damage. Add a fuel stabilizer to the fresh fuel. Briggs & Stratton says treated fuel stays usable for up to 24 months, which matters in a machine that may sit unused for six weeks between storms mid-winter.
- Change the engine oil. Most snowblowers take 5W-30 four-cycle oil, formulated for cold-weather starting. Drain the old oil into a container, refill to the level marked on the dipstick, and take the used oil to a municipal depot or an automotive retailer that accepts it. Manufacturers generally call for an oil change after the first five hours on a new machine, then every 50 hours or once a season, whichever comes first. Confirm the viscosity and capacity in your manual before you pour.
- Pull and inspect the spark plug. A fouled or corroded plug is one of the most common reasons a snowblower will not start in the cold. Remove it with a plug socket and look at the electrode. Replace it if you see corrosion, heavy carbon deposits or a worn electrode. Cub Cadet’s schedule calls for checking the plug every 25 hours and replacing it every 100 hours, but plugs are inexpensive enough that many owners simply fit a new one each fall.
- Inspect the drive and auger belts. Take off the belt cover and look for cracks, fraying, glazing or missing chunks. Replace anything that looks worn now rather than waiting, because a belt that breaks mid-storm ends the job immediately and the parts counter will be busy. Put the cover back on when you are done.
- Check the shear pins, and keep spares. Shear pins are the sacrificial fasteners holding the auger to its shaft. They are engineered to snap when the auger jams on a rock or a newspaper, which protects the gearbox. Inspect them for damage and buy a spare set in the correct size for your model. Do not substitute a hardware-store bolt. A hardened bolt will not shear, and the force that was supposed to break a two-dollar pin instead goes into bending the auger and destroying gears and bearings.
- Check the scraper bar and set the skid shoes. The scraper bar, also called the shave plate, wears down with use. Many have two usable edges and can simply be flipped over; if yours has already been reversed, replace it. Then set the skid shoes for the surface you clear. Manufacturers commonly call for roughly three millimetres of clearance under the scraper bar on asphalt or concrete, and around 13 millimetres or more on gravel so the machine does not fire stones. Slide a spacer of the right thickness under each side of the scraper bar, drop the skid shoes onto the ground, and tighten the hardware. Check the exact figure for your model, since it varies.
- Lubricate the moving parts and check the tires. Grease or oil the gear shaft and other lubrication points listed in the manual, keeping oil off the friction disc and drive plate on machines that use them. Check tire pressure, since uneven tires make the machine track sideways. Wipe away any dried road salt left from last winter, which corrodes a snowblower the same way it corrodes a car.
- Walk the property and mark obstacles. Pick up hoses, extension cords, rocks and anything else that can jam an auger. Push driveway markers in along the edges of the driveway, walkways and garden beds while the ground is still soft, so you can see what you are steering around once everything is white.
- Confirm the clearing tool is on the machine, then test-run it. Nearly every snowblower ships with a plastic clearing tool clipped to the housing. Make sure yours is still there, and buy one if it is missing. Most snowblower injuries happen when someone reaches into the discharge chute or auger by hand, and the CPSC has documented finger amputations from it. Stop the engine and use the tool, never your hand, even when the machine is off. With that confirmed, reconnect the spark plug lead and start the machine outdoors. Let it run a few minutes and cycle the chute and auger controls to be sure everything engages.
Once the machine runs cleanly, top the tank with treated fuel and store it in a dry, sheltered spot. If it will not start after all of this, or if you find damage in the gearbox, the friction disc or the electric-start wiring, that is the point to call an authorised dealer rather than keep going. Booking that repair in September costs a few days. Booking it the morning after a 30-centimetre dump costs a couple of weeks.
