LOS ANGELES – Connor McDavid had a goal and two assists in a dominant first period, and the Edmonton Oilers beat the winless Los Angeles Kings 4-1 on Tuesday night for their fifth straight win.
Leon Draisaitl opened the scoring early, finishing a low feed from McDavid after the captain froze Kings defenceman Cody Ceci. About a minute later, Vasily Podkolzin scored on a rebound after McDavid’s shot hit Kings goalie Darcy Kuemper. McDavid then scored late in the period off a pass from Ty Emberson at the blue line, giving Edmonton a 3-0 lead.
McDavid has at least three points in a period for the 33rd time in his career and for the 10th time in a first period. He has 16 points this season, including five multi-point games.
Podkolzin added an empty-net goal late in the third period, assisted by McDavid and Draisaitl, for his sixth and seventh goals of the season. Evan Bouchard had two assists.
Brandt Clarke scored for Los Angeles late in the second period with a long shot through traffic. It was his first goal since he signed a five-year, $37-million contract last June.
Devon Levi made 39 saves for the Oilers, who outshot the Kings 40-16. Kuemper was pulled after the first period and replaced by Anton Forsberg, who started the second.
Edmonton is 5-0-1 and has scored at least three goals in every game this season. The Oilers played without forwards Zach Hyman and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, who are out with injuries.
The Kings fell to 0-3-2 in Peter Laviolette’s first season as head coach. Los Angeles and Philadelphia are the only winless teams in the NHL.
The Oilers host the Utah Mammoth on Thursday. The Kings host the Boston Bruins on Saturday.
