Elections Alberta said no referendum advertising will be allowed in the advance voting area at Edmonton’s EXPO Centre on Friday, when the Forever Canadian campaign holds an event in the same building.
The agency said in a news release issued Oct. 15 that it runs an advance voting location for Electoral District 34 in Hall H of the EXPO Centre. The site is open for all five advance voting days, Oct. 13 to 17, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.
Elections Alberta said it knows Forever Canadian has an event scheduled in the EXPO Centre arena on Friday, Oct. 16. It said it is working with the EXPO Centre to limit referendum advertising near the voting place, including by managing the parking area, the entrance electors use and physical barriers inside the building.
The agency said Forever Canadian asked it for guidance on how to comply. Elections Alberta said only the designated voting area is subject to advertising restrictions, not the whole multi-location building, citing section 135(2) of the Election Act. That area includes the parking area directly outside the advance voting location, the nearest entryway and the part of the building where voting takes place. Staff will enforce the restriction, it said.
Staff and electors will use Entrances 1 and 2 on the east end of the EXPO Centre. Organizers have been asked to avoid parking, entrances and interior areas used by or next to voters on Friday.
Parking is free for electors who are there only to vote, and six spaces at the entrance are reserved for them. Additional parking staff and site monitors will be on hand Friday, the agency said.
Voters with questions can call 1-877-422-VOTE (8683). The referendum vote is Monday, Oct. 19. Our guide explains how to vote in Alberta’s Oct. 19 referendum, and earlier reports covered the 174,532 votes cast on the first advance day and what to know before Monday’s vote.
