WINNIPEG: Winnipeg voters have until Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. to cast an advance ballot in the municipal election, with the main vote set for Wednesday, Oct. 28, according to the City of Winnipeg.
The city’s Oct. 2 news release says advance voting runs from Oct. 5 to 23. Election day polls are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and results start posting shortly after 8 p.m., the city said in an Oct. 5 article on its website.
Where advance voting is still open
According to the city’s release, City Hall (Council Building, second floor, 510 Main St.) is open for advance voting throughout the period, excluding weekends and Thanksgiving. The remaining scheduled community sites are:
Oct. 16 to 18: Grant Park Shopping Centre, CF Polo Park and St. Vital Centre. Oct. 19 to 22: community advance locations in all 15 council wards. The city says community sites are open four days this year, up from three in recent elections. Hours vary by location, and the city’s release does not list them, so voters can check winnipeg.ca/election2026 or call 311.
The city’s Oct. 5 article says 23 general advance voting locations are open to the public. Election staff also visit hospitals, care homes, post-secondary schools and other facilities during the advance period, according to the city.
What to bring
Voters must show proof of name and current address, the city says. That can be one government-issued photo ID showing name, photo and address, such as a driver’s licence. Without that, two authorized documents are accepted if both show the voter’s name and at least one shows the current address. A voter’s notice is not required but speeds up the process, the city says.
Who can vote and mail-in deadlines
To vote for mayor or councillor, a person must be a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years old on Oct. 28, and an actual resident or property owner in Winnipeg since April 28, 2026, according to the city. School trustee voters must also live in the relevant school division ward on election day.
The city says voters who want a mail-in ballot must apply by Oct. 25 at 4:30 p.m. Completed ballots must reach the Susan A. Thompson Building at 510 Main St. by Oct. 26 at 8 p.m. Ballots cannot be dropped off at voting locations, the city said.
What is on the ballot
The city’s Oct. 5 article says 12 candidates are running for mayor, 54 for councillor and more than 90 for school trustee across the city’s 15 council wards and its school divisions. In the 2022 election, a record 41,895 voters cast ballots in advance, the city said.
CTV News Winnipeg reported on Oct. 5 that voters in the St. Vital ward will elect a new councillor for the first time in 15 years because Brian Mayes is not seeking re-election.
Details such as polling hours at each advance site were not published in the city materials reviewed for this report. Readers should confirm locations and times on the city’s election page before heading out.
