Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff escaped unhurt after gunmen opened fire near his car in Mumbai’s Juhu neighbourhood on Sunday evening, while his driver and another man were injured, police and Indian officials said, according to the Press Trust of India.
Three suspects were detained Monday aboard the Pune-Jaipur Superfast Express at the railway station in Kota, in the northern state of Rajasthan, Kota Superintendent of Police Tejaswani Gautam said, as reported by PTI and Outlook India. Gautam said one of the three is a minor and that the group had planned to flee to Nepal.
“A team from Mumbai Police has reached Kota and the suspects are being handed over to them,” Gautam said, according to PTI.
Juhu police first registered the case as attempted murder before it was transferred to the Mumbai Police Crime Branch, PTI reported. Investigators used CCTV footage to trace the suspects as they travelled by train toward Surat, in Gujarat, and alerted railway police and forces in neighbouring states, Outlook India reported.
Police said five or six rounds were fired at the car and that no weapon had been recovered, The Tribune reported Monday. An injured bystander was in stable condition at Mumbai’s KEM Hospital, the newspaper said.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the accused fled toward Surat after the shooting and then boarded a train bound for Jaipur, where Mumbai police coordinated with Rajasthan police to intercept them. “The police have acted with great speed,” he told reporters, according to PTI. “Everyone involved in this will be traced. No one will be spared.”
Fadnavis also said he had spoken with Shroff and assured him of security if required, and that those behind the attack, along with their handlers, would be brought to justice, Outlook India reported.
A social media post purportedly claimed responsibility for the shooting in the name of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, PTI reported. Police said they have not verified the post or established any gang involvement, and no motive has been confirmed.
The Bishnoi network has drawn attention in Canada as well. Canada News Media previously reported on key members of the gang named in a Canadian intelligence report. There is no indication of any Canadian link to Sunday’s shooting.
Shroff, 36, is one of Hindi cinema’s best-known action stars, with leading roles in the Baaghi franchise and the 2019 hit War. He is the son of veteran actor Jackie Shroff.
The investigation is continuing, and police have not said whether the suspects have been formally charged.
