Apple Patent Offers Sketch of Possible Notch Implementation in New MacBook Pros – MacRumors

Following the last-minute rumor that Apple’s upcoming new MacBook Pro models could feature a notch at the top of the display, much of the online discussion has involved concerns that such a notch would encroach on the active screen area, potentially eating into the macOS menu bar.


However, it’s worth noting that Apple has explored ways of including a notch in a MacBook Pro display that would avoid ingression into the main screen area, make the notch appear seamless against a black strip, and potentially allow for additional information to be displayed to the user that would also free up menu bar space in the main 16:10 display.

For example, an Apple patent filed in 2019 with the U.S. patent office, titled “Electronic Device Display With Extended Active Area,” describes, among various embodiments, a laptop computer featuring a main rectangular screen and two “extended regions” between the screen and an inactive border, wherein “the first and second rectangular extended regions are on opposing sides of the camera.”

Specifically, the laptop’s “first and second rectangular extended regions display icons on a black background while the main rectangular region displays a rectangular picture.”

“The first and second extended regions may be located on opposing sides of a camera or other electrical component in a protruding portion or island-shaped portion of the inactive region. Icons or other information may be displayed on a black background in the extended regions, giving the display a continuous unbroken appearance.”

Such an implementation could potentially add system status information in a black strip above the macOS menu bar, but that would of course require a significant adjustment to the way the menu bar operates on these new Mac models in the final release of macOS Monterey, and there’s been no evidence of that so far.

The notch rumor, while seemingly sketchy on its own, has gained some traction since Friday, initially due to a discovery by MacRumors of screen resolutions that will feature in the redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models.

In the ‌macOS Monterey‌ beta, MacRumors uncovered potential display resolutions of 3024×1964 and 3456×2234 for the rumored 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. When subtracting 74 pixels from the height of both, the resulting 3024×1890 and 3456×2160 resolutions work out to an aspect ratio of 16:10. All of Apple’s current MacBooks feature a 16:10 aspect ratio, leading to speculation that the extra 74 pixels could be for a notch.

The possibility that Friday’s rumor may have substance to it has further been bolstered by an alleged photo of a MacBook Pro screen with a notch that was originally shared by a Weibo account.

Apple is hosting a virtual event on Monday at 10 a.m. Pacific Time, with rumors widely suggesting the event will be focused on redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with a faster version of the M1 chip, brighter mini-LED displays, MagSafe, and additional connectivity.

Now that Qualcomm has finally made its next-generation flagship chipset official at its event in Hawaii, Realme has something to say too – and that is that the GT 2 Pro will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

It’s hard to imagine a less surprising announcement, but there you have it – it’s official now. Don’t forget, the upcoming GT 2 Pro is going to be Realme’s “first-ever ultra-premium flagship”, rising above the likes of the X50 Pro and previous members in the GT family.

Realme proudly boasts that it will be among the first manufacturers to launch a smartphone with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 mobile platform, an that phone will be the GT 2 Pro. Development of the device has started a few months ago, and this will end up being a “truly high-end flagship product that will exceed the expectations of young users around the world”, according to Realme VP Chase Xu.

The Realme GT 2 Pro with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 at the helm was in fact already spotted at AnTuTu scoring over a million points a few days ago. The phone is expected to have 125W wired charging support, up to 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM, up to 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage, a 6.51″ 120 Hz AMOLED screen, a 32 MP selfie camera, and a 50 MP main rear sensor with OIS.

Singapore tests out ‘smart bandage’ for remote recovery

Researchers in Singapore have developed a smart bandage to enable patients to have chronic wounds monitored remotely via an app on a mobile device, potentially saving them visits to the doctor.

A research team at the National University of Singapore has created a wearable sensor attached to a transparent bandage to track progress in healing, using information like temperature, bacteria type, and levels of pH and inflammation.

“Traditionally when someone has a wound or ulcer, if it’s infected, the only way to examine it is through looking at the wound itself, through visual inspection,” said Chwee Teck Lim, lead researcher at the university’s department of biomedical engineering.

“If the clinician wants to have further information then they will obtain the wound fluid and send to the lab for further testing,” he said.

“So what we’re trying to do is use our smart bandage to cut the number of hours or days to just a few minutes.”

The “VeCare” technology will enable patients to convalesce more at home and visit a doctor only if necessary.

The bandage is being tested on patients with chronic venous ulcers, or leg ulcers caused by circulation problems in veins.

Data collection by researchers on the wounds has so far been effective, according to Lim, who said the smart bandage could potentially be used for other wounds, like diabetic foot ulcers.

Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge configuration and colors leaked – here's the latest – Techradar

Over the past week, Xiaomi has been working overtime to share information in short bursts about its upcoming launches, including the Xiaomi 11i phones set for an India launch. The latest addition to these updates bring us the their configurations and the color variants of these devices. 

Tipster Ishan Agarwal, working with 91Mobiles says Xiaomi 11i HyperCharge may be tethered to 8GB RAM and 128GB storage with two color options – Camo Green and Stealth Black. The report goes on to add that details about the launch date could be in soon as the handset could arrive in December itself. 

Meanwhile, Xiaomi Founder and CEO Lei Jun set to rest speculations about Motorola stealing their thunder. He appeared in a video during Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Tech Summit 2021 event to confirm the name of Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship as also the fact that it’d feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1chipset. He did not mention a date but said the phone “will be available soon”. 

Xiaomi 11i Hypercharge specs (expected)

The Xiaomi 11i Hypercharge, which is the rebranded Redmi Note 11 Pro+, comes with a 6.67-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and a punch-hole cutout. A triple-camera setup on the back features a 108MP primary camera, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, and a 2MP depth sensor. 

A side-mounted fingerprint sensor for security and a 16MP snapper on the front for selfies and video chats are also present on the device powered by a 4,500mAh battery that supports 120W fast charging. 

The device has the MediaTek Dimensity 920 chipset under its hood and is coupled with up to 8GB LPDDR4x RAM and 256GB UFS 3.1 storage that is further expandable via a microSD card.
