Amazon Echo Dot

The Echo Dot is the sensible first Alexa speaker for a bedroom, dining room or home office. It costs $104.99 and carries a 4.6-star rating from 20,581 ratings, and the listing shows more than 2,000 bought in the past month. Amazon says it plays music, audiobooks and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others, or over Bluetooth, and that it has a mic off button, built-in motion and indoor temperature sensors for routines, and a tap-to-snooze alarm. We did not read individual customer reviews, so we are not summarizing owner complaints. Skip it if you want big sound for a large room, since Amazon pitches the Echo and Echo Dot Max for that.

Amazon Echo

The Echo is the middle step for larger bedrooms, living rooms and kitchens. It sells for $129.99 with a 4.6-star rating from 11,420 ratings. Amazon describes clear highs, dynamic mids and deep bass that adapt to the room, and a built-in hub for compatible Zigbee devices and Ring Smart Lighting products, so it can double as the brain of a small smart home. Multi-room music works across Echo devices, and it can pair with compatible Fire TV devices. We did not read owner reviews. It is a better pick than the Dot if you want one speaker to fill an open space, and a poor one if you only need an alarm and weather in a small room.

Amazon Echo Dot Max

The Echo Dot Max is Amazon’s pitch for people who want Dot-sized convenience with more bass. It costs $169.99 and has a 4.4-star rating from 5,618 ratings, with more than 500 bought in the past month. Amazon says it delivers nearly twice the bass of the Echo Dot (2026 release), adapts playback to the room, pairs with a second Dot Max for stereo and controls smart home devices without a separate hub. The listing also shows a used offer from Warehouse Deals; we priced the new unit sold by Amazon.ca. It costs $40 more than the Echo, so compare the two before you buy.

Amazon Echo Spot

The Echo Spot is a smart alarm clock first and a speaker second. It costs $154.99 and has a 4.5-star rating from 46,364 ratings, the largest review count of the six. Amazon says it shows the time, weather and song titles, lets you change clock faces and colours, and can run a wake-up routine with music and gradual light. It also controls compatible smart home devices from the touchscreen. It suits a nightstand or a small desk. Skip it if you want a camera or a large display for video, because the Spot is not built for that.

Amazon Echo Show 5

The Echo Show 5 puts a 5.5-inch display and a built-in camera on a desk or kitchen counter for $139.99. It has the lowest rating here, 3.9 stars from 5,564 ratings, which is worth weighing against the Echo Spot at 4.5 stars for $15 more. Amazon says it shows news and weather, makes video calls, views compatible cameras such as a front-door camera, and runs a photo slideshow when idle. We did not read the reviews behind the lower score, so we cannot say what owners dislike. Pick it only if you specifically want the camera and screen at a low price.

Amazon Echo Show 8

The Echo Show 8 is the most capable device in this guide at $199.99, with a 4.3-star rating from 29,593 ratings. Amazon lists an 8-inch HD touchscreen, spatial audio, a 13 MP camera with auto-framing for video calls, and support for Zigbee, Matter and Thread smart home devices without a separate hub. That makes it the strongest pick for a kitchen or a family hub, where one screen handles timers, calls, cameras and lights. It is also the priciest, so skip it if you only want to play music or set alarms.

How to choose an Alexa speaker in Canada
Start with the room. A Dot suits a bedroom or office, an Echo or Dot Max suits a living room, and a Show 8 suits a kitchen. If you want a clock or a camera, move to a Spot or a Show. If music quality is your priority, Amazon’s Echo speakers are built for convenience, and a dedicated speaker such as the ones in our Bluetooth speakers guide, or a Wi-Fi speaker such as the Sonos Era 300, may suit you better.
Smart home support is the second question. The Echo and the Show 8 include hubs for some device types, which cuts the need for extra gear. A speaker also works best on a strong network, so a weak router can hurt voice control, and our mesh Wi-Fi guide covers that. If you plan to add lights or outlets, see our smart plugs guide, and our home security cameras guide if you want to view a camera on a Show screen.
Amazon’s listings for these devices are labelled “Designed for Alexa+”. We did not verify which Alexa+ features are available in Canada, so check Amazon’s Alexa pages before you buy if a feature matters to you. Language support is a second check: if you want to use Alexa in French, confirm it in the Alexa app or on Amazon’s language page first. Our Black Friday 2026 guide tracks when Amazon sales may start. Black Friday falls on Nov. 27, and Amazon often marks down its own devices around then, but we cannot promise a discount on any of these.

How we chose: we searched Amazon.ca for Alexa smart speakers and displays, kept devices with ratings of at least 3.9 stars and more than 5,000 ratings, and opened each product page to confirm the price, rating and that the buy box was sold by Amazon.ca. Specifications come from Amazon’s own listings, which we link. We did not test the products, did not read individual customer reviews, and left out bundles, kids’ models and third-party sellers.
