12 a.m. –Union Gospel Mission outlines plans for Thanksgiving dinner during pandemic
The United Gospel Mission’s annual Thanksgiving dinner in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside will be a lot different this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The UGM still plans to serve more than 1,600 meals to those in need this weekend but they will be served “to go” instead of having hundreds of people gather in the dining hall, which isn’t allowed under public health orders.
Nicole Mucci, a spokesperson for UGM, says a limited number of staff, wearing personal protective equipment, will serve takeaway meals out the door.
There will be fewer meals served at several locations as well. The UGM says they will offer about 1,600 dinners over the course of several days rather than serving up to 3,000 meals on one day at its main building.
