FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Jimmy Garoppolo was once considered to be the man in waiting to take over at quarterback in New England for Tom Brady.
Now he’s the guy who helped hand the Patriots their worst home loss under Bill Belichick.
Jeff Wilson Jr. rushed for a career-high three touchdowns and 112 yards before leaving with an ankle injury and the San Francisco 49ers crushed New England 33-6 on Sunday.
Garoppolo finished 20 of 25 for 277 yards with two interceptions in his first game against his former team. San Francisco (4-3) has followed back-to-back losses with consecutive wins and is 3-0 on the road.
“It was an exciting night. Lot of emotions. Couldn’t imagine it going any better than this,” Garoppolo said.
The Patriots’ 27-point loss was their largest at home under Belichick. They had gone 286 games without a three-game losing streak, the longest span between three-game slides in NFL history. New England fell to 2-4 for the first since Belichick’s first season in 2000, when the Patriots went 5-11.
New England was outgained 467-241 in total yards.
“We were clearly out-coached, outplayed. Just out-everything,” Belichick said. “We’re still a long way from where we need to be. That’s obvious.”
San Francisco’s Brandon Aiyuk had six catches for 115 yards and Deebo Samuel had five catches for 65 yards before leaving the game with a hamstring injury.
“When we got them down, we got to keep them down, don’t want to give them any chance to breathe. I thought we did that tonight,” Garoppolo said. “Started from the first snap and carried its way throughout the whole game.”
Cam Newton struggled for the Patriots, completing 9 of 15 passes for 98 yards and three interceptions before being replaced by Jarrett Stidham in the fourth quarter. Stidham was 6 of 10 for 64 yards and an interception.
Belichick said his plan is to keep Newton as the starter.
“Yeah, absolutely,” he said.
Newton was out of sync from the outset, making poor reads and poorer throws. Garoppolo, meanwhile, was successful in spreading out New England’s defence with a steady diet of passes behind the line of scrimmage and jet sweeps to get the ball into the hands of Wilson, Samuel and tight end George Kittle.
San Francisco dominated the first half, taking a 23-3 lead, holding the ball for 22:30 and racking up a 301-59 advantage in total yards. The Patriots managed four first downs to the 49ers’ 18.
The Niners took just over five minutes and nine plays to march 75 yards and take a 7-0 lead on 3-yard run by Wilson. It was the first time the Patriots have allowed a touchdown on an opponent’s opening drive at home since Week 4 of 2016 against Buffalo.
Following a Patriots punt, San Francisco was pinned inside its 15. Long completions by Garoppolo helped erase some early penalty losses before he missed high on a pass for Kittle and was intercepted by Devin McCourty.
San Francisco’s defence limited the damage, yielding a 40-yard field goal by Nick Folk.
That wasn’t the case for the Patriots later in the second quarter.
Trailing 10-3, Newton made a bad play worse when he tried to dump off the ball on the run to receiver Jakobi Meyers. It was picked off by linebacker Fred Warner. Five plays later, the 49ers capitalized on a 4-yard touchdown run by Kyle Juszczyk.
The lead grew to 23-3 with just under a minute to go before halftime on a 16-yard run by Wilson.
“D just played impressive the whole day. I thought special teams and offence did, too. It was an extremely physical game,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said. “It was fun to watch.”
49ers: WR Richie James left with an ankle injury. … Wilson had just crossed into the end zone following his third TD when his leg twisted as he was tackled. He stayed down on the field before walking off under his own power. Shanahan said the tentative diagnosis is a high ankle sprain. “Not sounding great right now,” he said.
Patriots: WR N’Keal Harry left with a head injury and did not return. … LG Joe Thuney departed with an ankle injury. … RT Justin Herron also left with an ankle injury.
With an 11-yard pass to Jakobi Meyers in the third quarter, Newton became the 48th NFL quarterback to reach the 30,000-yard plateau.
He also became the first NFL player to pass for 30,000 yards and rush for 5,000 yards in his career.
The 49ers head to Seattle next Sunday. The Patriots visit Buffalo.

The Richmond Spiders and Kentucky Wildcats meet Sunday in college basketball action at the Rupp Arena.
The Richmond Spiders look for another win after beating Morehead State in their season opener. The Louisville Cardinals are averaging 82 points on 55.6 percent shooting and allowing 64 points on 43.1 percent shooting. Nathan Cayo is averaging 23 points and one rebound while Grant Golden is averaging 16 points and four rebounds. Blake Francis is the third double-digit scorer and Jacob Gilyard is grabbing five rebounds. The Louisville Cardinals are shooting 29.2 percent from beyond the arc and 41.7 percent from the free throw line. The Louisville Cardinals are allowing 26.7 percent shooting from deep and are grabbing 33 rebounds per game.
The Kentucky Wildcats look for another win after beating Morehead State in their season opener. The Kentucky Wildcats are averaging 81 points on 55.9 percent shooting and allowing 45 points on 34 percent shooting. Brandon Boston Jr. is averaging 15 points and seven rebounds while Devin Askew is averaging 12 points and three rebounds. Terrance Clark is the third double-digit scorer and Davion Mintz is dishing three assists. The Kentucky Wildcats are shooting 37.5 percent from beyond the arc and 64.3 percent from the free throw line. The Kentucky Wildcats are allowing 14.3 percent shooting from deep and are grabbing 35 rebounds per game.
The Spiders are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 road games and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall. The Wildcats are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The over is 5-1 in Spiders last 6 overall. The under is 4-1 in Wildcats last 5 home games.
Both of these teams had their way with Morehead State in their openers, but it was Kentucky that had more success on the defensive side and allowed nothing from beyond the arc. Richmond is not a pushover, but I question the depth to be able to hang with this Kentucky team for 40 minutes. The Kentucky Wildcats will have a run in the second half to pull away in this contest. I’ll lay the reasonable chalk with Kentucky.
Kentucky Wildcats -7
Argentine prosecutors investigate death of soccer star Maradona – DAWN.com
Argentine justice officials are investigating the death of soccer star Diego Maradona and ordered the search of properties of his personal doctor on Sunday, a local prosecutor’s office said.
Maradona died at age 60 of a heart attack on Wednesday. The search order was requested by prosecutors in the affluent Buenos Aires suburb San Isidro and signed by a local judge, according to a statement issued by the prosecutor’s office.
“Yesterday [Saturday] the investigation and substantiation of evidence continued with the taking of statements from people including direct relatives of the deceased,” it said.
“By virtue of the evidence that was collected, it was considered necessary to request searches at the home and office of doctor Leopoldo Luque,” the prosecutor’s office said in the statement.
The prosecutor’s office provided no information on what prompted the investigation.
Maradona’s lawyer, Matias Moria, on Thursday said he would ask for a full investigation of the circumstances of the soccer legend’s death, criticising what he said was a slow response by emergency service.
“The ambulance took more than half an hour to arrive, which was a criminal idiocy,” Matias said on Thursday in a Twitter post.
NFL Week 12 Takeaways: Mahomes, Hill outclass Brady and his Buccaneers – Sportsnet.ca
At one point in the game, Hill and Mahomes had connected on seven receptions for 203 yards and two touchdowns — all in the first quarter. That’s only happened three times in the last 30 seasons.
It’s safe to say Hill has cemented his reputation as one of the fastest wideouts in the NFL with 14 touchdowns of 50-plus yards since he entered the league in 2016 — the most by any receiver in that time.
— Kansas City Chiefs (@Chiefs) November 29, 2020
Unfortunately for Tom Brady, this is the second time he’s watched Mahomes air out a 75-yard touchdown on the sidelines. Brady himself had two interceptions, increasing his total to 11 on the season to match his total from 2018.
The Buccaneers did make it interesting as they eventually got to within three points of the Chiefs, but it was Mahomes who came out victorious with 462 passing yards — the second-most of his career.
Broncos have forgettable week
No team in the NFL has felt the impact of COVID-19 like the Denver Broncos did on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.
Without a starting quarterback, the Broncos had to turn to practice roster receiver Kendall Hinton, who hasn’t played the position since 2018. Unfortunately for Hinton, he only completed one pass for 13 yards and had two interceptions.
Denver went the entire first half without completing a pass, something the team has saw once before when Tim Tebow did the same back in 2011. Fortunately for the Broncos, they did manage to score three points, which was the same total Brady and the Bucs had back in Week 9.
The Broncos also became the first team since the 1998 San Diego Chargers to complete just one pass for 15 or fewer yards. Back in Week 3 of the ’98 season, quarterback Ryan Leaf went 1-of-15 for four yards and two interceptions against the Chiefs.
King Henry runs wild on Colts
Going up against one of the top run defences in the NFL, Derrick Henry showed the Indianapolis Colts why he is their kryptonite.
The Colts have only allowed a player to rush for 100 or more yards twice this season — it was Henry both times. This time around, he finished the game with 27 carries for 178 yards and three touchdowns
Henry now sits ahead of Dalvin Cook as the NFL’s rushing leader, and has been instrumental in the Titans’ success as of late. It shouldn’t be surprising that teammate A.J. Brown called for Henry to be put in the MVP conversation.
Henry has 100 or more rushing yards in eight straight road games, tying Chris Johnson for the second-longest stretch since the 1970 merger, trailing Barry Sanders’s record of 10 straight games.
Chinn has memorable performance
While the Carolina Panthers lost in heartbreaking fashion to the Minnesota Vikings, Jeremy Chinn had a day to remember.
The rookie safety had a career-high 13 tackles and two fumble recoveries for touchdowns on consecutive plays. It was a first in the Super Bowl era, and he was the fastest player to do so as the plays came within 10 seconds of game time.
For the Vikings, the victory almost got away from them when Chad Beebe muffed a punt at the Minnesota 14-yard line. Fortunately for Beebe, his defence bailed him out as they held Carolina to a field goal, and the Vikings marched down the field to score with the receiver hauling in a 10-yard touchdown.
Playoff picture getting interesting
There was a lot of movement in the NFL standings in Week 12, highlighted by the Titans regaining the AFC South and the New York Giants moving into top spot in the NFC East.
With the NFL extending the playoff format, more teams have a chance to earn a post-season berth, which means the next few weeks will be crucial for any team on the bubble.
The Baltimore Ravens’ game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday is a crucial one considering the Ravens (6-4) sit on the outside looking in as the eighth seed in the AFC. The Colts’ loss to the Titans opens up a chance for the Ravens (6-4) to jump back into the playoff picture as they have the tiebreaker.
Sitting behind them are the Las Vegas Raiders (6-5) who suffered a tough loss to the Atlanta Falcons while the New England Patriots (5-6) kept themselves in the conversation with a win over the Arizona Cardinals.
In the NFC, there will likely be some movement depending on what happens on Monday night between the Philadelphia Eagles and Seattle Seahawks.
The Eagles can reclaim the lead in the division with a win. With Daniel Jones expected to miss time with a hamstring injury, Philadelphia could be in a race with just the Washington Football Team from now until the end of the season, which is what we all expected ahead of the campaign.
The Chicago Bears missed a big opportunity to move past the Cardinals with their loss to the Green Bay Packers but still have a chance to get back into a playoff spot. Chicago owns the tiebreaker over Arizona as they have one more conference win but need to beat the Detroit Lions in Week 13 and for the Cardinals to lose against the Los Angeles Rams to move into the seventh seed in the NFC.
Both the Vikings and San Francisco 49ers earned big wins to stay in the playoff hunt, but face a tough road if they expect to leapfrog the Bears and Cardinals.
