No. 8 BYU stopped No. 2 Notre Dame at the goal line on the final play to win 28-24 at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah, on Saturday, ending the Fighting Irish’s 16-game winning streak, ESPN reported.

Bear Bachmeier threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Walker Lyons with 1:47 left to cap a 10-play, 55-yard drive and put BYU ahead for good, ESPN and On3 reported. Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr then drove the Irish to the BYU nine-yard line, converting a fourth down with a pass to Micah Gilbert, but his last pass fell incomplete in the end zone.
Bachmeier passed for 224 yards, ran for two touchdowns and caught another, according to ESPN. Carr threw for 261 yards, and Nolan James Jr. ran for 77 yards and a touchdown for Notre Dame.
BYU led 21-10 at halftime after Bachmeier scored on a five-yard run and a one-yard dive and caught a 15-yard pass from Kyler Kasper. Carr fumbled while trying to spike the ball at the BYU five-yard line at the end of the half, and Isaiah Glasker recovered, ESPN said.
Notre Dame rallied in the second half. A muffed punt return and a failed BYU fake punt set up two Irish field goals, and Jonaz Walton’s three-yard run gave Notre Dame a 24-21 lead with 9:31 left. Jayden Sanders intercepted Bachmeier at the Notre Dame 15 with 8:05 remaining before BYU’s winning drive, according to ESPN.
BYU improved to 6-0 for its third straight 6-0 start and beat Notre Dame for the first time since 2004, while the Irish fell to 6-1. ESPN reported it was the first time five teams in the AP top eight lost on the same regular-season day, with No. 1 Georgia also falling 27-24 to Auburn, the first time the top two teams lost on the same day since Nov. 17, 2012.
Notre Dame visits Navy on Oct. 31, and BYU plays at UCF on Oct. 24.
