Universal and Blumhouse’s horror film Other Mommy opened at No. 1 at the North American box office with an estimated $27.5 million US over the weekend of Oct. 9 to 11, 2026, despite a D+ CinemaScore from opening-night audiences.
The film, starring Jessica Chastain and directed by Rob Savage, played in 3,365 theatres, an average of $8,172 US per screen, Boxoffice Pro reported on Oct. 11. Sony’s The Social Reckoning opened fifth with an estimated $5.5 million US, far below the $22.4 million US debut of the 2010 original, according to the same report.

The weekend as a whole grossed $85.2 million US, down 15 per cent from last weekend and up 19.2 per cent from the same weekend in 2025, Boxoffice Pro said. The outlet called it a slow frame compared with a $86.2 million US weekend a month earlier.
The $27.5 million figure is a Sunday estimate, not a final studio actual. Filmofilia reported that Saturday forecasts had called for about $28 million, and the Sunday number came in slightly lower. Cosmic Book News reported that Thursday previews earned $3.6 million US and that Friday took in about $12.3 million US, according to Deadline, or $12.6 million US, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Audiences and critics split sharply from the box office result. Boxoffice Pro described the D+ CinemaScore as rare and listed a 47 per cent audience score and an 18 per cent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Cosmic Book News reported that it is the lowest CinemaScore for a wide release since Megalopolis in September 2024.
Reviews were harsh. Richard Lawson of The Hollywood Reporter called the film “an attractive but mostly vacuous collection of jumpy bits and half-baked mythology,” while Variety’s Siddhant Adlakha wrote that it was “among the most limp and ineffectual works to grace the screen this year,” Cosmic Book News reported.
Boxoffice Pro credited Universal’s marketing for the result, saying “wild trailers” created a “basic want-to-see factor” beyond genre fans. Cosmic Book News said the opening is in line with recent Universal horror debuts, including The Black Phone at $23.6 million US, The Black Phone 2 at $27.3 million US and The Exorcist: Believer at $26.5 million US.
The film is also inexpensive. Variety, as relayed by Filmofilia, put its production budget at $18 million US, while Cosmic Book News reported $19 million US. Variety reported that Other Mommy added $17.69 million US from its first international markets, for a global opening of $45.19 million US.
The Social Reckoning had a harder start. Its estimated $5.5 million US came from 2,606 screens, about $2,111 US per screen, with a B- CinemaScore and a 54 per cent Rotten Tomatoes score, Boxoffice Pro said. Boxoffice Pro wrote that the result “turned out about as bad as even the greenest box office prognosticator could have predicted.” Filmofilia, citing Variety, reported a $30 million US budget and a $9 million US worldwide start.
Elsewhere on the chart, Verity took second place in its second weekend with $11.48 million US and $53.86 million US in total, Boxoffice Pro reported. That is about a 65 per cent drop from the $32.6 million US opening we reported on Oct. 8. Resident Evil placed third with $8.35 million US and Heart of the Beast fourth with $7.1 million US.
For Canadian readers, the North American totals combine U.S. and Canadian theatres, and the box office reports reviewed here did not break out Canadian grosses. All dollar figures above are in U.S. dollars.
Studios typically release final weekend actuals on Monday, Oct. 12, and the figures above may be revised. Second-weekend results for both films will be reported after Oct. 16 to 18.
