The RCMP is involved in the investigation into a deadly explosion and fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in east-central Alberta, according to CBS News, as officials on Saturday night still had not released how many people were killed or hurt.
Updated Oct. 18, 2026. This is a developing story, and details below come from Canadian Press, CBS News and CP24 reports.
Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed deaths and injuries earlier Saturday but gave no numbers, as we first reported. He called the situation “very active and delicate,” CBS News reported, and said he understood the town of Wainwright was not threatened.
Gen. Jennie Carignan, the chief of the defence staff, said the military was “dealing with a serious incident at CFB Wainwright,” according to CBS News. National Defence has not said what caused the explosion, where on the base it happened or when it started.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a social media post that a “serious incident creating a major fire” had occurred at the base and that he and Premier Danielle Smith were in close contact. Smith called the fire “significant and tragic” and said it was affecting many military personnel. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre urged residents to follow emergency instructions and keep roads clear for first responders, CBS News reported.
The Municipal District of Wainwright said the fire, driven by high winds, crossed the base fence earlier in the day and was spreading quickly south of the town. As of 7:30 p.m. MT there was no evacuation order, according to CP24. Firefighters from several jurisdictions were responding, and the town was helping with hospital care and firefighting support.
STARS air ambulance sent two helicopters to Wainwright, one from Saskatoon and one from Edmonton, The Canadian Press reported. Acute Care Alberta said Emergency Health Services was on scene supporting care and transport. Conservative MP Dane Lloyd, whose riding is west of Edmonton, said he had heard of “significant casualties.”
The weather made the response harder. Large parts of Alberta were under wind warnings Saturday, with gusts of up to 100 km/h, according to The Canadian Press. Our earlier coverage of the wind warning and its power outages shows how widespread the conditions were that day.
The incident also reached the ballot box. Elections Alberta closed the advance voting location at the Wainwright Communiplex and directed voters to the Border Inn in Lloydminster or the Vermilion Elks Hall, CP24 reported. Alberta votes Monday, Oct. 19, in a referendum that includes a question on beginning a legal process toward a binding vote on separation. More than one million ballots had already been cast, we reported earlier Saturday. Elections Alberta had not said whether the Wainwright closure would be extended or how local voters would be accommodated on Monday.
CFB Wainwright is one of the busiest training sites in the Canadian Army. It hosts the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre, which prepares units for realistic battlefield conditions, and the 3rd Canadian Division Training Centre, which provides basic infantry training, The Canadian Press reported. That means the base can hold large numbers of soldiers, including recruits, at one time, though officials have not said who was affected.
The base has also been at the centre of recent federal spending. McGuinty said on Oct. 7 that Wainwright was among the Alberta bases being modernized or expanded as part of more than $8 billion in federal military investment in the province.
Several basic questions remain unanswered. Officials have not released casualty figures, the names of those killed or injured, the cause of the explosion, or whether the fire is contained. The RCMP’s role comes from CBS News alone, and the Canadian Press reports did not mention it.
The fire comes after a severe wildfire season in which fires burned 4.5 million hectares across the country.
Canadian Armed Forces, Alberta and Wainwright emergency channels are expected to issue further updates. We will update this story as confirmed information is released.
