MONTREAL – Dylan Samberg scored 3:30 into overtime Tuesday night as the Winnipeg Jets erased a four-goal deficit to beat the Montreal Canadiens 5-4 at the Bell Centre.
Winnipeg trailed 4-0 midway through the third period before scoring four goals in 2 minutes 6 seconds, the last of them with 32 seconds left in regulation, according to The Canadian Press. The Jets’ own site called it their fastest four goals in franchise history.
The comeback ended a nine-game winless streak. Winnipeg (5-8-3) had not won since Oct. 13. Montreal (9-3-3) lost for the first time in six games, after winning five in a row, The Canadian Press reported.
Canadiens built a four-goal lead
Owen Beck scored his first goal of the season at 3:05 of the first period, and Josh Anderson made it 2-0 at 18:18. Cole Caufield scored on the power play early in the second period to make it 3-0, then added his 10th of the season 46 seconds into the third with Montreal on another power play, according to NHL.com’s game summary.
Jacob Fowler made 42 saves for the Canadiens. Stuart Skinner started in goal for Winnipeg.
Four goals in just over two minutes
Tyrel Bauer put Winnipeg on the board at 17:21 of the third period with his first career NHL goal. Morgan Barron scored 42 seconds later, at 18:03, to make it 4-2.
Kyle Connor scored with the extra attacker when exactly one minute remained, and again 27 seconds later, to tie the game 4-4. Mark Scheifele assisted on both of Connor’s goals.
In overtime, Samberg finished from the right circle for the winner, with Adam Lowry and Gabriel Vilardi credited with the assists, according to The Sports Encounter. NHL.com’s Canadiens recap lists the same assists.
“Yeah, we’re gonna enjoy this one,” Connor said, according to the Jets’ website. “You got to enjoy the wins in the National Hockey League.”
Jets coach Scott Arniel said: “Well, I just think that you have to play the 60 minutes.”
Suzuki still out for Montreal
Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki missed his sixth straight game with a hand injury and appears close to returning, The Canadian Press reported. We have reported on his injury. Montreal had also beaten Winnipeg earlier this season, when Fowler stopped 33 shots in a 2-1 outdoor win.
Arber and Florian Xhekaj became the first brothers to record a point on the same goal since the Kostitsyns on Jan. 17, 2009, The Canadian Press reported.
What’s next
The Jets host the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday to open a three-game homestand. The Canadiens host the Utah Mammoth on Thursday at 7 p.m. ET.
Elsewhere in the league, we also covered the Oilers’ 4-3 shootout loss to the New Jersey Devils.
