Beckett Sennecke and Pavel Mintyukov each scored twice as the Anaheim Ducks held off a late Edmonton Oilers rally for a 5-4 win Thursday night at Rogers Place, snapping Edmonton’s five-game point streak, according to NHL.com.
Sennecke added an assist, as did Mintyukov, and Cutter Gauthier had a goal and an assist for Anaheim (8-7-1). Connor McDavid had a goal and three assists for Edmonton (11-3-3), extending his season-opening point streak to 17 games, NHL.com reported.
Gauthier opened the scoring on the power play at 9:26 of the first period, with a pass across the slot from Jackson LaCombe. Evan Bouchard tied it with 19 seconds left in the first, also on the power play, off a pass from behind the net by McDavid.
McDavid put Edmonton in front 2-1 at 2:34 of the second, finishing a shorthanded rush against Nikita Nesterenko by batting a rebound out of the air. The lead lasted 63 seconds. Mintyukov tied it at 3:37 with a shot off the stick of Mathieu Joseph, then scored again at 6:15 when Judd Caulfield’s point-blank shot was cleaned up past Edmonton goalie Matt Tomkins’ blocker.
Sennecke made it 4-2 with 38 seconds left in the second, lifting a cross-crease pass from Tristan Luneau over Tomkins’ extended left pad. He scored again 1:42 into the third on a tic-tac-toe play, a one-timer at the right post, to push the Ducks ahead 5-2, per NHL.com.
Edmonton did not go quietly. Kasperi Kapanen scored on the power play with 3:36 remaining to make it 5-3, and with Tomkins pulled for an extra attacker, Leon Draisaitl cut it to 5-4 with 44 seconds left on a cross-crease pass from McDavid. The Oilers could not find the equalizer. Bouchard has now scored in three straight games, and Gauthier has nine goals over his past four.
ESPN’s box score listed 36 penalty minutes for Edmonton and 21 for Anaheim. Edmonton outshot the Ducks 25-21, and the two sources differ on Anaheim goalie Laurent Brossoit’s save total (NHL.com has 23 saves, ESPN’s box score shows 21), so that figure is not confirmed here.
The loss follows Edmonton’s 4-3 shootout loss to the Devils and comes after a win over the Rangers in which Tomkins starred. Anaheim arrived off a 6-3 win over the Senators that featured a Gauthier hat trick.
ESPN’s injury report lists Oilers goalie Tristan Jarry as out and forward Zach Hyman on injured reserve.
