Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning opened to an estimated $5.5 million at 2,606 theatres in the U.S. and Canada over the weekend of Oct. 9 to 11, placing fifth behind the horror film Other Mommy, according to studio estimates.
That is about one-quarter of what the original film, The Social Network, took in on its opening weekend in 2010, which Forbes put at roughly $22 million. It also fell short of the $7 million to $8 million Variety had projected and the $6 million Deadline had forecast, Forbes reported.
The Sony Pictures release dramatizes the 2021 leak of Facebook documents by whistleblower Frances Haugen and Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz. Mikey Madison plays Haugen, Jeremy Allen White plays Horwitz and Jeremy Strong plays Mark Zuckerberg. Sorkin wrote and directed the film.
Audiences gave it a B- CinemaScore, The Associated Press reported. Forbes said the film holds 54 per cent positive reviews from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 72 per cent audience score. Its production budget is about $30 million, Variety reported, below the roughly $40 million Forbes said The Social Network cost.
The weekend belonged to Universal’s Other Mommy, which opened to an estimated $27.5 million from 3,365 theatres despite a D+ CinemaScore, the AP said. Verity was second at about $11.5 million, down 64 per cent in its second weekend, and Resident Evil took $8.4 million, lifting its domestic total to $138.5 million, according to the AP and box-office tracker The Numbers. Our earlier report on Other Mommy has more on that opening.
The film has a Canadian link. Its Wikipedia entry says principal photography took place in Vancouver from Oct. 22 to Dec. 9, 2025, under the working title Goliath. We could not confirm that detail with a second source, and none of the reports we read gave a separate Canadian gross. Box-office totals for the U.S. and Canada are reported together.
Zuckerberg has not commented on the new film, Forbes reported. Of the 2010 original, he said in a 2014 interview that it “made up a bunch of stuff that I found kind of hurtful,” according to Forbes.
The $5.5 million figure is a Sunday estimate. Studios publish final weekend numbers on Monday, Oct. 12, and they can shift slightly. The film’s second weekend, Oct. 16 to 18, will show whether word of mouth can lift it.
