Tigers sign rookie Kevin McGonigle to eight-year, $150M extension

The Detroit Tigers are keeping one of their most promising youngsters around for the long haul.

Rookie infielder Kevin McGonigle has signed an eight-year, $150 million extension to stick around in Motown, the team announced Wednesday.

The deal will kick in next season and will run through 2034. According to MLB insider Robert Murray, the deal includes a $14 million signing bonus and performance escalators that could take the deal to $160 million.

McGonigle has been on a tear to begin his MLB career, batting .311 with a .908 OPS and one home run through 17 games this season.

Selected by the Tigers 37th overall in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft out of high school, McGongigle has enjoyed a quick rise through the minor leagues, and his strong play during this past spring training earned him an Opening Day call-up to the majors for the first time in his young career.

The 21-year-old joins the growing list of young players signing multi-year extensions with their respective clubs shortly into their major-league careers or before even debuting in MLB.

Earlier this season, the Seattle Mariners signed shortstop Colt Emerson to an eight-year, $95 million deal before suiting up in MLB, while the Pittsburgh Pirates inked rookie Konnor Griffin to a nine-year, $140 million deal shortly after his call-up to the majors.
