The S&P/TSX composite index closed up 181.06 points, or 0.51 per cent, at 35,801.09 on Monday, TMX Money data showed, after climbing as high as 36,042.35 in the morning. The gain recovered part of the 629-point drop on Friday. The close was confirmed by Yahoo Finance data.
The index opened at 35,723.41 and had been up more than 300 points by mid-morning, when gold miners and banks led the advance. It gave back about 241 points from its intraday peak by the 4 p.m. ET close. The day’s low was 35,682.49, which was still above Friday’s close of 35,620.03.
Friday’s drop was a tech-driven selloff, as weak results from Amazon and Intel rattled technology stocks. Monday’s session also began with oil sliding on talk of Iran negotiations, which weighed on energy producers earlier in the day.
About 286.7 million shares changed hands on the index, according to TMX Money. The index is up 12.321 per cent so far this year and 1.09 per cent for November, TMX said. Its 52-week high is 37,069.11.
