This year, A Very Vegan Thanksliving will raise money for the Excelsior 4, local activists awaiting sentencing in the BC Supreme Court for exposing mass animal cruelty at local hog farm
Vancouver, BC – On Friday, October 7th, ‘ A Very Vegan Thanksgiving returns for its third iteration. The event launched in 2018, and received coverage for the unique individual the night was fundraising for: Gertie the one-legged turkey.
The event features Chef Asha Wheeldon [Kula Foods], Chef Dee Dimla [Blue Heron Cheese and Lumi Foods], Chef Karen McAthy [Blue Heron Cheese and Lumi Foods], and Chef Shani Cohen [Shanis Seasoning.] The chefs will prepare a 5-course, seasonal meal, featuring local producers, products, and partners.
The event is spearheaded by Zoe Peled, founder of the Vancouver Vegan Resource Centre. From “seasoned” vegans to those looking to ask a few questions, the VVRC works to support folks at all stages of the veg journey. It operates as a mobile centre, highlighting workshops, events and Pop-Up series.
In July, Amy Soranno and Nick Schafer of the Excelsior 4 were found guilty in the BC Supreme Court, for their roles in exposing mass animal cruelty at Excelsior Hog Farm, and await a sentencing date of October 12th. Event proceeds support the Excelsior 4 legal fund, “as they prepare to appeal their conviction, address the complicity of our justice and enforcement systems, and prompt legal change to help protect these animals.”
The event, which is co-presented by community partners WR Mattress Gallery and Dr. Matthew Nagra, ND, will be held at the Juice Truck [Main Street location], on Friday, October 7th. Doors will open at 7:30PM, and tickets can be obtained through Zoe Peled.
