Volkswagen is recalling 2023, 2024 and 2025 ID.4 electric SUVs in Canada because the high-voltage battery could overheat and create a fire risk, Transport Canada said in a recall notice updated Oct. 9.
The notice, filed under recall number 2026469, said a battery that overheats can start a fire even while the vehicle is parked and turned off. The notice does not say how many vehicles in Canada are affected.
Until the repair is available, owners are advised to set the vehicle’s maximum charge level to 80 per cent. Volkswagen is still developing the permanent fix and will notify owners by mail once it is ready, according to the notice.
The recall was first published Sept. 30. The notice is posted on the Government of Canada recalls and safety alerts site, and owners can look up their vehicle by VIN in Transport Canada’s recall database.
It is not the first battery recall for the model. Auto123 reported in January that two earlier Transport Canada recalls covered 8,526 and 136 ID.4 vehicles in Canada, also over battery overheating and fire risk, with owners then told to limit charging to 80 per cent. Those totals relate to the earlier recalls and may not match the vehicles in this one.
Owners who are unsure whether their vehicle is covered can contact a Volkswagen dealer or Volkswagen Canada customer service.
