Environment Canada has issued a wind warning for the City of Edmonton, St. Albert and Sherwood Park, with west winds gusting to 90 km/h expected to develop overnight into Saturday.
The weather office said some isolated gusts may reach 100 km/h. The winds are expected to reach the Grande Prairie area near midnight tonight, arrive in the Edmonton area overnight and reach Lloydminster by morning. They should ease from the northwest to the southeast late Saturday morning to early afternoon.
Environment Canada said local utility outages are possible, high-sided vehicles will be pushed around by the wind, and damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is possible. People are urged to secure loose objects and to stay away from fallen power lines.
The warning was issued at 12:54 p.m. MT Friday. It comes from the same system that has put a wind warning in place for Calgary, where gusts of 90 to 100 km/h are expected through the evening. We reported earlier on the Calgary wind warning, on the wind and rain outlook for the weekend and on BC Ferries cancelling sailings as the storm hit the B.C. coast.
Environment Canada asks Albertans to report severe weather to [email protected], by calling 1-800-239-0484 or on social media with #ABStorm. Current alerts are posted on the Environment Canada website.
