Standing in the Octagon after his defeat at UFC 305, Israel Adesanya was visibly disappointed but took a moment to reflect on his journey. The 35-year-old former two-time middleweight champion found himself back in the same RAC Arena in Perth, Australia, where his UFC career began in February 2018. After his 12th consecutive UFC title fight, Adesanya was faced with the first losing streak of his tenure in the company, but he chose to embrace the full circle of his UFC experience rather than dwell solely on the loss.
“I didn’t think this far, I didn’t manifest this,” Adesanya humorously remarked to Daniel Cormier during his post-fight interview. “But I know everyone, you guys love me. This is where I started my career in the UFC, this is where I made my dream — right here in Perth.”
Despite the setback, Adesanya quickly dismissed any notions of retirement. “Look, I’m 35, I’m doing the right things,” he said, emphasizing his commitment to continuing his fighting career. “And I know all you motherf—ers want to see me lose, you want to see me down, but watch this—I’m not f—ing leaving. I’m not f—ing leaving!”
Adesanya’s defiant stance resonated with the crowd as he exchanged handshakes with Cormier and shared a respectful embrace with du Plessis, putting to rest any lingering tension between the two fighters.
Reflecting on the fight itself, Adesanya admitted disappointment in his performance but acknowledged the skill of his opponent. After nearly a year away from competition—his last fight taking place in September 2023—Adesanya’s fourth-round submission loss via rear-naked choke was a tough pill to swallow, but he remained proud of how he performed after the layoff.
“I’m disappointed in myself,” Adesanya said, “but at the same time, I’m proud because this is the best I’ve ever felt, this is the best I’ve ever looked, and I just had the better man on the night. I’ll give him respect for that.”
While the loss was undoubtedly a setback for “The Last Stylebender,” his resolve and determination to remain a dominant force in the UFC were evident. As he looks ahead to the next chapter in his storied career, Adesanya’s fans can be assured that he has no plans of stepping away from the Octagon anytime soon.
