After Canada’s heartbreaking overtime loss to the U.S. in the Olympic gold-medal game, McDavid was named tournament MVP.
McDavid led the tournament in scoring with two goals and 11 assists. His 13 points set the record for most points of any player in a single Olympic tournament with NHL participation.
It’s another trophy for McDavid that comes at the end of a gut-wrenching loss, similar to when he won the Conn Smythe trophy two seasons ago after losing to the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final.
The Edmonton Oilers captain was also named to the tournament all-star team, along with Canadian teammates Cale Makar and Macklin Celebrini.
Celebrini, just 19 years old, led the tournament with five goals, while Makar scored Canada’s lone goal in the gold-medal game.
Team USA’s Connor Hellebuyck was the goaltender to make the all-star team after a sensational gold-medal game that saw him make 41 saves.
American defenceman Quinn Hughes and Slovakian forward Juraj Slafkovsky were the other players named to the all-star team.
