Cineplex Inc. said Oct. 13, 2026, that its box office revenue for the third quarter reached a record $215.7 million, up about 35 per cent from $159.5 million a year earlier, and that September’s $45.1 million was the best September in the company’s history.
The quarter was $56.2 million better than the same three months of 2025, when Cineplex reported a 9 per cent drop. Cineplex’s news release credits a summer slate led by Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey.
August did most of the work. Cineplex reported $98.0 million for the month, almost double the $49.1 million it took in during August 2025. July was flat at $72.6 million, compared with $72.7 million a year earlier. September rose about 20 per cent from $37.7 million, and the company said Resident Evil drove the month with the largest opening weekend and the highest gross of any film in that franchise.
Revenue per patron, a measure of how much each moviegoer spends on tickets, topped $14 in a third quarter for the first time in company history, Cineplex said. Premium formats made up more than 50 per cent of third-quarter box office, another record for the quarter. Theatre food service revenue was also the highest for any quarter in company history. The company did not disclose attendance.
Cineplex described Spider-Man: Brand New Day as the highest-grossing domestic release of all time and The Odyssey as the highest-grossing premium-format film in its history. Those claims come from the company’s release, and Cineplex did not publish title-by-title revenue figures in it.
“The consistency of our performance over the past several quarters, including a record-setting third quarter” reflects the appeal of theatrical entertainment, chief executive officer Bill Walker said in the release. He also pointed to strong advance ticket sales for upcoming releases, naming Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three, and said he was confident in the theatrical pipeline.
The results mark a sharp turn from last year. When Cineplex reported September 2025, the Canadian Press said the month’s $37.7 million, up from $35.2 million, was driven by The Conjuring: Last Rites, while the third quarter fell short of the $174.9 million posted in 2024. The company’s monthly results this year have also been uneven. We reported in March that February box office was $32.4 million, down from $34.9 million a year earlier.
For Canadian moviegoers, the numbers point to higher spending on premium screens rather than a bigger crowd, since attendance was not released. Cineplex’s October and November numbers will show how Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three, which the release says have outstanding advance sales, perform against that record.
