Social Activism was ones strength, while the other held onto her Faith as her foundation.
Both Dolly Parton and Gloria Steinem have died just a few days apart. Voices that have been silenced by “Death” yet they still are alive within the minds and hearts of girls and women the world over. Truly different yet their message often range true: the same goals, just different methods used to achieve that goal. From two very different social/political traditions, one traditional and the other progressive to the point of revolutionary. One sang iconic songs that helped shape America, while the other marched in protests that often became riots.
Yes, these two Women could not be more different except for their one united voice, a message to generations past and the future….Women will not celebrate the past, but march towards a future where true equality, respectful treatment and heightened ambitions can be achieved, whether the male gender agrees with it or not. A Sexual Revolution brought about Women’s Global visibility. Silent efforts by more traditional Womanhood persuaded the weaker sex that Women should be granted Entitlement to Corporate Hierarchy and Participation within it. Throughout society, be it civil, public or private organizations, corporations or governments, allowed near full participation of the fairer sex because of these two women and the millions of women like them.
Near her death bed Gloria Steinem still worked tirelessly trying to end trafficking, genital mutilation and family/office abuse of women. Gloria’s bailiwick was internationally based in The United Nations and multiple Corporate Board Rooms. Dolly Parton’s efforts centered upon education for young girls and women, supporting shelters, school breakfasts & lunches, sending destitute children to medical and school programs and increasing females presence within the electoral college. She often said “you cannot change the world without being a part of it”. Gloria Steinem would surely agree that 60% of the Global Population needed representation and a clear voice, be it a protestation or a call for celebration.
These two women may have become examples for the on coming generation proclaiming clearly “If you do not fight for your rights who will”? The feminist Movement has lost a living hero and global voice. The “traditionalist world” has lost a voice that lifted up girls and women in a spiritual ,cultural and socially responsible fashion. Women led to lead others through their own example. Humanity called upon to protect the innocent (girls) and encourage equality to its fullest for Women Hood everywhere.
