Love of Your Life, the romantic drama starring Margaret Qualley that had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, is now streaming on Prime Video, where it was released on Oct. 14, Yahoo reported.
Qualley’s name drew more than 200 searches in Canada on Saturday, according to Google Trends, as viewers sought out the film and explanations of its ending.
The Amazon MGM Studios film was directed by Rachel Morrison from a screenplay by Julia Cox, and was produced by Canadian actor Ryan Gosling and former Apple executive Jessie Henderson through their Open Invite Entertainment banner, Yahoo reported. Morrison previously directed The Fire Inside for Amazon MGM.
Qualley plays Maya, an emergency room nurse at a busy Boston hospital who meets Charlie, played by Gabriel Basso, according to a review by Deadline chief film critic Pete Hammond, written after the film’s TIFF screening on Sept. 13. The film opens like a romantic comedy before the COVID-19 pandemic overwhelms Maya’s hospital and upends the couple’s life, Hammond wrote. The story later jumps ahead several years to find Maya living as an expatriate in Lisbon.
Hammond described the film as meandering at times but said it stayed engaging because of Qualley’s screen presence, writing in Deadline that she “makes Amazon MGM’s new romantic drama worth watching.” Todd Banhazi served as cinematographer.
The film is exclusive to Prime Video, so viewers need a subscription to watch it, Yahoo reported. IMDb has published an explainer on the film’s ending, and Variety has interviewed Morrison about Qualley, the pandemic setting and the ending.
The Toronto festival has long served as a launch pad for awards-season and streaming titles. This year’s festival also drew Prime Minister Mark Carney, as we reported in September. Other recent streaming releases with Canadian ties include Netflix’s Below, which set a viewing record for a Canadian title, and the fourth season of The Diplomat, which killed off one of its main characters.
