A 10-year adult Canadian passport costs $163.50 and a five-year passport $122.50 when you apply in Canada, after fees rose on March 31, 2026, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada says. Regular processing takes 10 to 20 business days, and adults who meet strict conditions can now renew online.
Updated Oct. 22, 2026. Fees and service standards checked on canada.ca on Oct. 22, 2026.
The fees are posted on IRCC’s passport fee page for Canada, and the processing times on its service standards page, which was last updated Oct. 20, 2026. IRCC says it is the first passport fee increase since 2013 and that fees will now be adjusted every year for inflation under the Service Fees Act.

How much does a Canadian passport cost in 2026?
IRCC raised passport fees for applications received on or after March 31, 2026. The fee you pay depends on the date IRCC receives your application, not the date you mail it, and mailed applications with the old fees have been returned since April 30, according to the fee change notice.

How long does it take to get a passport in Canada right now?
IRCC posts service standards rather than live wait times, and says they show roughly how long processing takes under normal circumstances. These were the posted standards when checked on Oct. 22, 2026. They do not include mailing time.
| How you apply | Service standard |
|---|---|
| In person at a passport office or a Service Canada Centre offering 10-day service | 10 business days |
| In person at other Service Canada Centres or outreach sites | 20 business days |
| By mail in Canada | 20 business days |
| Online renewal | 20 business days |
| Mailed from the United States or elsewhere abroad | 20 business days |
| Express pickup | 2 to 9 business days |
| Urgent pickup | By end of next business day |
IRCC advises travellers not to finalize plans until the passport is in hand. Demand remains high: Employment and Social Development Canada’s passport statistics show 2,065,761 passports were issued from April 1 to Sept. 30, 2026, including 358,031 in September.
Can you renew a Canadian passport online?
Yes, but only some adults qualify. IRCC’s online renewal page says you must have applied for your current passport at 16 or older, and the passport must be a regular blue passport, valid for five or 10 years, issued in the last 15 years and showing your place of birth.
Your passport must also expire within the next six months or already be expired. You must be renewing your own passport, have a home and mailing address in Canada, keep the same name, date of birth, place of birth and gender identifier, and not be travelling in the next 20 business days. The passport cannot be damaged, seized or surrendered, or have an observation in it.
Your current passport is cancelled as soon as you apply online, and IRCC warns delivery can add five business days to the 20-day processing time. You need a digital photo taken in person by a commercial photographer. Applications start through the IRCC Portal, and payment is made online.
Who can renew instead of applying for a new passport?
For renewals in person or by mail, IRCC’s renewal criteria say your last passport must have been an adult passport issued when you were at least 16, issued within the past 15 years and valid for five or 10 years, with the same name, date of birth, place of birth and gender identifier you want on the new one. Renewals do not need a guarantor, proof of citizenship or identity documents, but you list two references. Child passports cannot be renewed; a new application is needed each time.
How do urgent and express passport services work?
Both are available only in person at a passport office and require proof that you need the passport, such as an airline, bus or train ticket, a paid travel itinerary, proof of illness or death in the family, or a written statement explaining a legal, banking or residency need. Drivers can provide a written statement explaining why they need to travel.
Urgent service means pickup by the end of the next business day. Express service usually takes 2 to 9 business days, though IRCC says Kelowna, B.C., and Pointe-Claire, Que., need at least four business days and Charlottetown at least three. Weekend and statutory holiday service is for emergencies only. IRCC says meeting a deadline is not guaranteed. If you are planning holiday travel, our Christmas and Boxing Day stat holiday guide shows which days offices are likely closed.
What documents do you need for a new adult passport?
First-time adult applicants need all of the following: original proof of Canadian citizenship, such as a birth or citizenship certificate; an identity document; a guarantor; two references; two identical photos; and any valid Canadian passport or travel document you already hold.
The guarantor must be at least 18, a Canadian citizen who has known you for at least two years, and hold a five- or 10-year Canadian passport that is valid or expired for less than a year. References must be 18 or older and have known you for at least two years, and cannot be your guarantor or a relative.
What are the passport photo rules?
| Rule | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Number | Two identical photos for paper applications |
| Size | 50 mm wide by 70 mm high; face 31 mm to 36 mm from chin to crown |
| Age of photo | Taken no more than six months before you apply |
| Background | Plain white or light-coloured |
| Expression | Neutral, eyes open, mouth closed, no smile |
| Glasses | Clear lenses with no glare; no sunglasses or tinted lenses |
| Back of photo | Studio name, address and date; guarantor signs for new applications |
| Digital (online renewal) | JPEG, 1,200 to 3,000 pixels wide and 1,800 to 4,500 high, 200 KB to 5 MB; no scanned prints |
The full rules are on IRCC’s passport photo page. IRCC suggests getting both a print and a digital photo so you can apply by any method.
