Kylian Mbappé scored twice, including a winner in the 87th minute, as Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 in El Clásico at Spotify Camp Nou on Sunday.
The result cut Barcelona’s lead atop La Liga to three points. It was Real Madrid’s first win in Barcelona in three years, Sky Sports reported.
Mbappé put the visitors ahead in the 41st minute when a clearance from Barcelona defender Gerard Martín struck him and deflected into the net. The goal came at the end of a fine Real Madrid move that included a cross from Yan Diomande.
Barcelona levelled in the 61st minute. Pedri reversed a pass into Raphinha, whose snapshot beat goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, who got a hand to the ball but could not keep it out.
Real Madrid then had to defend as the hosts pushed for a winner. Lunin made a strong save to claw away a powerful Martín header from a corner in the 66th minute, and Lamine Yamal’s shot bounced just wide in the 78th.
Real Madrid struck again with three minutes left. Jude Bellingham created the chance with some sharp skill, and Eduardo Camavinga cut the ball back for Mbappé, who slotted it in. Sky Sports reported that Real Madrid’s staff came onto the pitch to celebrate, that head coach José Mourinho slid on his knees, and that players clashed with Barcelona fans.
There was controversy before Barcelona’s equalizer. Sky Sports reported that defender João Cancelo was not punished after he put his studs into Diomande’s calf in the 57th minute.
The defeat is a second blow in a week for Hansi Flick’s side. Barcelona lost 4-2 at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday, which ended an 11-game winning streak at the start of the season. Read our report on that match.
Before Sunday’s match, ESPN listed Barcelona with nine wins and one loss in La Liga and Real Madrid with eight wins and two losses. Real Madrid beat RB Leipzig 4-1 in the Champions League last week in a game in which Mbappé also scored. Our report on that game is here.
