World shares were mostly higher on Monday and oil prices fell after rising last week to their highest level in more than four years, The Associated Press reported. It said investors were bracing for corporate earnings and central bank decisions this week that could shake markets, including results from Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon. In early European trading, Germany’s DAX rose 0.7 per cent, the CAC 40 in Paris gained 0.9 per cent and Britain’s FTSE 100 added 0.5 per cent, AP said. Our report on oil’s run to a six-month high has the background on crude.
Celestica, the Toronto-based electronics manufacturing services company, is scheduled to release third-quarter results after the market close on Monday, according to the company. It is the first of a heavy week of earnings from Canadian companies. The Canadian Press reported that Precision Drilling Corp. (TSX:PD) reports on Tuesday, followed on Wednesday by Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (TSX:AEM) and Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. (TSX:CP). Restaurant Brands International Inc. (TSX:QSR), Teck Resources Ltd. (TSX:TECK), Spin Master Corp. (TSX:TOY), Air Canada (TSX:AC) and TMX Group Ltd. (TSX:X) are due on Thursday. Cameco Corp. (TSX:CCO), Canadian National Railway Co. (TSX:CNR), Imperial Oil Ltd. (TSX:IMO) and Magna International Inc. (TSX:MG) report on Friday.
The Bank of Canada is the main event. Financial market odds of a rate hike stood at nearly 78 per cent as of Friday afternoon, according to LSEG Data & Analytics, The Canadian Press reported. The central bank has held its policy rate at 2.25 per cent for seven consecutive meetings. RBC economists said in a note to clients that they now expect a quarter-point hike, though they described their conviction as “very low” and said the bank could instead use the meeting to set up a move in December or January. Our Bank of Canada rate decision explainer sets out what is at stake.
Statistics Canada reported last week that the annual inflation rate rose to 3.1 per cent in September as the war in the Middle East drove up gasoline prices, and that the economy lost 68,000 jobs that month, CP reported. Statistics Canada also releases gross domestic product figures for August on Friday. Federal finance officials are also in focus ahead of the federal budget on Nov. 5.
