Rabbi means Teacher. Don’t we need more teachers, truly wise men and women with worlds of lived experience to share with us all?
I read with interest an article about a Hamilton Rabbi, 102 years old, yet quick like a whip, profound in thought and mind. Steve Paikin of TVO fame interviewed this iconic Canadian and wrote about this man’s views on a New Personal 10 Commandments for our time.
1. You shall not overpopulate the earth.
2. You shall share your natural resources with others
3. You shall not pollute or despoil the earth
4. Preserve the family to keep it secure.
5. You shall not engage in wholesale murder.
6. You shall have respect for the Elderly.
7. You shall not pervert the truth
8. Strive to make your life worthwhile
9. Learn to live together as members of the Human Race.
10 Why don’t you suggest a truth, hope or expression of wisdom????
At 102 years of age, Rabbi Bernard Baskins much like a walking, talking Sacred Book, someone to listen to. Steve Paikin’s respect showed throughout the article. What is there not to respect or admire?
A Commandment does not necessarily have to have religious overtones. Do you have rules that assist you throughout your life? Commonsense, wisdom and lived experience will often help to lead, suggest and direct others towards a helpful future. If you look at each commandment, you will notice how open-ended many are to interpretation. Choosing how to do what is commanded is totally up to you. That is the good thing about Judeo-Christian Belief, the central gift of The Creator is giving humanity the ability to choose. How, When, where and why shall I do what needs to be done? The commonsensical ability to choose, makes us liken to Gods. Preserve family, save the planet, and respect those around you and the planet we all live on. Marvel at the complicated simplicity of the message. The Commandments mentioned above are calling upon you to be mindful, do and act for the betterment of all your neighbours.
Blessed are the Wise, for words of wisdom sprout forth into the ears of others in need.
