A couple from Vancouver had their stolen Hyundai Accent successfully recovered with the help of Apple’s AirTags, showcasing the effectiveness of the device in assisting law enforcement.
Becca Hislop and her partner Dylan decided to place an AirTag in their 2013 Hyundai Accent as a precautionary measure. Unfortunately, their car was stolen from a location near Science World. Although it remains unclear how the thief managed to start the car, it is speculated that they hot-wired the vehicle due to its age.
Using a carshare vehicle, the couple utilized the location provided by the AirTag and successfully located their stolen car in traffic near St. Paul’s Hospital. Dylan approached the thief, but despite their promises to stop the car, the thief ultimately drove away.
The couple immediately reported the theft to the police and provided them with real-time location data from the AirTag. With the help of their friends, they embarked on their own pursuit, tracking the stolen vehicle as it made stops at McDonald’s and a winery.
Law enforcement took the case seriously, conducting traffic stops and searching residences. However, they were unable to locate the vehicle. Meanwhile, the couple found what they believed to be their stolen car based on AirTag information. Unfortunately, the thief had already discovered the AirTag and planted it in a carshare vehicle. The police then reached out to the carshare company for information on customers who had rented the vehicle in question.
Ultimately, the authorities found the stolen vehicle on East Hasting Street, indicating that the thief had likely abandoned it upon realizing they were being pursued by the police. Although it is unclear if the car sustained any damage, it was found that the fuse panel had been removed, possibly in an attempt by the thief to disable any potential GPS trackers.
Following the incident, Becca Hislop plans to install two AirTags in her car to minimize the chances of a thief discovering and removing the tracker. AirTags come equipped with a feature that alerts nearby iPhones if they are being moved with a smartphone. This serves as an anti-stalking measure, intended to prevent the misuse of AirTags by individuals with malicious intent.
In an effort to help the police apprehend the thief, Hislop has shared a video of Dylan’s encounter with the criminal, hoping that someone will recognize the individual and provide crucial information to law enforcement.
