Apple just can’t get enough of AI startups, it seems.

The tech giant has reportedly purchased a little known AI-company for around $200 million. According to GeekWire, the acquired company is a Seattle-based startup called Xnor.ai. that specializes in low-power, edge-based artificial intelligence tools.

Bloomberg confirmed the acquisition with an Apple spokesman. Business Insider has contacted Apple and Xnor.ai for comment.

Despite its acquisition by Apple, Xnor.ai owes its existence to Microsoft – sort of. That’s because it’s an alumnus of AI2, an incubator for AI startups funded by Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen’s Institute for Artificial Intelligence .

Though it’s not yet clear exactly how Xnor.ai’s products will be used by Apple, the startup is also thought to specialize in image recognition software. Sources told GeekWire that Apple paid in the range of $200 million.

Apple’s purchases of Turi and Xnor.ai form part of a wider recent tendency on its part towards buying small AI firms.

Last month, it acquired British AI firm Spectral Edge, a Cambridge-based firm that uses combines image-fusion technology with machine learning to dramatically enhance the quality of iPhone photos.

In May last year, Apple CEO Tim Cook said the tech giant acquires a company „on average, every two to three weeks,“ with the company „primarily looking for talent and intellectual property“ when making these purchases.

Here are the browsers iOS 14 now lets you set as default – The Verge

Published

on

With iOS 14, Apple finally lets you choose which browser you want to use as your default, letting you switch away from Safari if you’d rather use a third-party alternative like Chrome or Edge. Apple is also letting iPhone users change their default email app in the updated OS.

To be a candidate for the default browser, developers have had to update their apps. All browsers are still required to use WebKit as their underlying browsing engine, meaning that the main differences between them will come down to their user interfaces and how they sync with other platforms, rather than how they fundamentally render web pages. At the moment there’s only a limited selection of browsers that can be set as the default on iPhone.

Here’s a list of alternative default browsers we can confirm:

  • Chrome
  • DuckDuckGo
  • Edge
  • Firefox

Notably absent from this list are the iOS version of Brave (although the company has confirmed that the latest version of its browser is currently going through Apple’s review process) and Opera Touch (the iOS version of Opera). We also downloaded a variety of other iOS browsers that are frequently recommended in “best iOS browsers” lists including Dolphin, Ghostery, UC Browser, and Aloha, and found that they did not appear in the default browser selection menu.

As of this writing, there appears to be a bug in iOS 14 which resets your default browser to Safari whenever your device reboots. Apple is yet to respond to our request for comment on the bug, but we’d expect it to be fixed with an upcoming patch for iOS.

In order to change your default browser, head into the Settings app, then scroll down to the browser you want to be your default. Click it and you’ll see a “Default Browser App” option if it’s default eligible.

'Monster Hunter Rise' debuts on Switch in March 2021 – Engadget

Published

on

There’s a certain kind of joy that can only be achieved when you wallop a virtual dragon in the face with a Great Sword, and Nintendo Switch owners are getting another chance to feel it. Capcom confirmed today in a partner-focused Nintendo Direct that Monster Hunter Rise will launch on the Switch on March 26, 2021.

The “Rise” in the title refers partially to the games heightened sense of verticality — you’ll be able to run up cliff faces and zip through the air like a ninja, thanks to helpful new creatures called Wirebugs. (Players will able to carry multiple Wirebugs, so it seems likely they’ll be slowly meted out over the course of the game.) This time, your Palico is joined by a much bigger Palamute — it’s a big, Zacian-looking dog that can do damage on its own and serve as a much-needed mount. The extra movement speed it offers should come in especially handy since different areas of the game’s world are “seamlessly” connected, not broken into distinct zones that players have to watch load. And maybe best of all, Capcom is touting the return of full-on four-player co-op with multiple Switches.

Some of the Monster Hunter die-hards have probably already pre-ordered the game’s Deluxe Edition, which grants access to (among other things) costumes for your canine and feline hunting companions. If you’re looking for a real jewel for your shelf, though, there’s always the Collector’s Edition, which includes those previously mentioned goodies and throws in a sticker pack, an enamel pin and an Amiibo of Magnamalo, the game’s signature draconic enemy. If you’re going eagerly wait for the game, you might as well shell out for a tiny plastic dragon, right?
