The best dog winter coat for most Canadian owners is the Kuoser reversible waterproof coat, listed at $34.99 on Amazon.ca with a 4.3-star average from more than 61,000 ratings. If your dog needs a built-in harness, the Norbi coat is $44.99, and for a heavy canvas jacket the Carhartt is $76.84. The Ontario SPCA’s cold-weather pet tips say a coat or blanket and a warm shelter matter when temperatures drop.

Our dog winter coat picks
No. 1, best for most dogs: Kuoser Waterproof Reversible Dog Coat. This is the coat for an owner who wants one dependable layer that works from a Maltese-sized pup to a Labrador. Kuoser lists seven sizes, a windproof and waterproof polyester shell, a double-layer fleece lining, magic-tape closures at the neck and belly, an elastic chest panel and a leash hole on the back. It comes in 13 plaid colours and wears reversible. At $34.99 it carries a 4.3-star average across 61,934 ratings and is marked a number-one best seller in dog cold-weather coats. The listing itself advises measuring your dog and sizing up if in doubt, so do not buy by breed name alone. The leash hole means you clip to a separate harness or collar, not to the coat.

No. 2, best with a built-in harness: Norbi Reflective Dog Winter Jacket. Norbi folds the harness into the coat. You step the dog in, zip it up and clip the leash to reinforced D-rings, which means one less thing to fasten on a dark, cold morning. The listing describes reflective strips, a wind-resistant shell and a plush fleece lining, and the title calls it waterproof and windproof. It is $44.99 (the listing also showed a coupon price of $41.39), comes in 10 sizes from XX-Small to XXXXX-Large, and averages 4.4 stars from 6,989 ratings. Amazon’s own summary of reviews says owners like the quality, fit, warmth and harness, but have mixed views on sizing and zipper quality. Check the size chart before ordering, and consider the larger size if your dog sits between two.

Most of the dogs people ask about are not tiny. Shepherds, pit bulls, border collies and retrievers need a coat that covers a deep chest, and that is where a purpose-made large-breed cut earns its price.

No. 3, best for large dogs: IECOii Zip-Up Dog Coat for Large Dogs. IECOii sizes by chest measurement, which is the right way to do it. The eight sizes run from 13.8 inches (35 cm) to 47.24 inches (120 cm) around the chest, and the XL shown on the listing fits a 29.9 inch (76 cm) chest. It pairs a waterproof, windproof outer with a polar fleece lining, a turtleneck collar, reflective straps, a built-in harness with a sturdy D-ring and a zip that opens along the back. At $50.99 it averages 4.6 stars from 1,438 ratings, the highest score of the budget coats here. Amazon’s review summary says buyers like the warmth, the easy on-and-off and the harness, and the zip, while durability gets mixed reviews.

No. 4, best for a tough, wind-blocking jacket: Carhartt Firm Duck Insulated Dog Chore Coat. This is the one buyer who will pay more for a coat that looks and wears like workwear. Carhartt lists a 12-ounce firm-hand duck canvas shell, triple-needle stitching on the main seams, a quilted liner and a corduroy-lined collar, with adjustable neck, chest and waist straps. The brand’s sizing runs from small (chest 16 to 21 inches, or 41 to 53 cm) to extra large (30 to 45 inches, or 76 to 114 cm). At $76.84, down from a listed $81.72, it is the priciest coat here, and it is shipped and sold by Amazon.ca. It averages 4.7 stars from 292 ratings and is marked Amazon’s Choice. The listing calls it weather resistant, not waterproof, so treat it as a windproof layer for dry cold rather than a rain shell.

No. 5, best budget pick: Queenmore Fleece Reversible Dog Winter Coat. At $26.34, Queenmore is the least expensive coat on the list, and it still comes in eight sizes. The listing describes a waterproof, reversible, reflective design with a soft fleece lining and an easy hook-and-loop closure. It averages 4.4 stars from 7,355 ratings. Queenmore’s own sizing note says a size small from one brand will not necessarily match another, and to choose the larger size if your dog falls between two. Because it is a vest-style layer, short-haired and small dogs are the likeliest fit; a deep-chested dog may want the IECOii instead.

No. 6, best for a wide size range: ASENKU Reversible Dog Winter Coat. ASENKU sells sizes from XS to XXXL, which covers a Pomeranian through a Great Dane-sized chest on paper, with a chest size of 25.6 inches (65 cm) listed for the XL. The listing describes a lightweight polyester-fibre fill, a water-resistant outer shell and a plaid fleece lining that flips for two looks, with adjustable closures at the neck and belly, a leash hole and a small back pocket. It costs $36.99 and averages 4.4 stars from 6,576 ratings, and carries an Amazon’s Choice badge. Amazon’s review summary highlights quality and a strong hook-and-loop closure. The listing says water-resistant, so it suits snow and light wet better than a soaking rain.

How we chose. We searched Amazon.ca for waterproof and winter dog coats on Nov. 2, 2026, and shortlisted coats with at least a 4.2-star average and a large number of ratings. Every coat here was shown as shipped by Amazon or sold by Amazon.ca or the brand’s own store; we left out listings from unfamiliar third-party sellers. We read each listing’s specifications and Amazon’s summary of owner reviews, then ranked by fit for the query, not by price or commission. We have not tested any of these coats. Prices, sizes and colours change often.
How do I size a dog winter coat?
Measure, do not guess. The three numbers that matter are chest girth (around the widest part of the rib cage behind the front legs), neck girth and back length from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Brand charts disagree with each other, so use the chart on the exact listing. Both Kuoser and Queenmore advise choosing the larger size when your dog falls between two. A coat that is too tight restricts the shoulders; one that is too loose lets wind in and can slip when the dog crouches.

Do dogs need a winter coat in Canada?
It depends on the dog. Short-haired, small, very young and older dogs lose heat faster, while thick-coated northern breeds often cope without one. Whatever the breed, animal welfare groups keep the advice simple. The Winnipeg Humane Society says to watch pets closely outside in below-freezing weather and notes that ears and paws are especially prone to frostbite, and the Alberta SPCA has its own guidance on pets and cold. A coat covers the torso only, so it does not replace short walks, dry paws and a warm place to come back to.
Waterproof, water-resistant or insulated: which matters most?
For dry prairie cold, insulation and wind-blocking matter most, and the Carhartt’s canvas fits that. For coastal and eastern slush, a waterproof outer such as the Kuoser, Norbi or IECOii keeps the lining dry, and a damp lining stops insulating. Listings use the words loosely, so compare what the listing says: waterproof, water-resistant and weather resistant are not the same promise. Reflective trim is worth having for evening walks in a season that brings dark by late afternoon.
When is the best time to buy a dog coat in Canada?
Pet apparel sells most in the first cold snap, so sizes can run out in November. Amazon.ca’s Black Friday sales start around Nov. 27 and Boxing Day is the other usual sale window, but discounts vary by seller and size and are never guaranteed. If your dog is between sizes, buy early while the size you need is in stock. Several listings here showed list prices above the sale price on Nov. 2, including the Carhartt at $76.84 against $81.72.
Who should skip these coats
Who it suits: owners of short-haired, small, senior or lean dogs, and anyone walking at dusk in wet or windy cold. Who should skip: owners of thick-coated northern breeds that run hot, and anyone whose dog refuses to wear clothing; forcing a coat on a stressed dog is not a good trade. If your dog scratches at a coat or walks stiffly in it, take it off. For other winter walking gear, see our guides to ice cleats and rechargeable hand warmers.
Frequently asked questions
What size dog coat should I buy?
Buy by chest girth, not by breed name. Measure behind the front legs and compare with the chart on the exact listing. If your dog is between two sizes, Kuoser and Queenmore both recommend the larger one.
Is a dog coat with a built-in harness safe?
The Norbi and IECOii coats list built-in harnesses with metal D-rings and reflective strips. Check that the straps fit snugly, that the D-ring sits behind the shoulders and that the stitching is sound before every walk. Coats with only a leash hole, such as the Kuoser, need a separate harness underneath.
Is a waterproof dog coat the same as a water-resistant one?
No. Waterproof claims mean the fabric is meant to keep out rain and wet snow, while water-resistant and weather resistant mean lighter protection. The ASENKU and Carhartt listings use the lighter terms.
Do all dogs need a coat when it is cold?
No. Short-haired, small, very young and older dogs usually benefit most, while thick-coated breeds often manage. Check your dog’s ears and paws after walks, and ask your veterinarian if you are unsure.
