MONTREAL: Cole Caufield scored 30 seconds into overtime Thursday night as the Montreal Canadiens battled back from three deficits to beat the Utah Mammoth 5-4 at the Bell Centre, two days after blowing a four-goal lead against the Winnipeg Jets.
Caufield beat Utah goaltender Sebastian Cossa with a wrist shot down the right wing for his team-leading 11th goal of the season, The Canadian Press reported. It was his second overtime winner this season. In 384 games, Caufield became the fastest player in NHL history to reach 15 career overtime goals, ahead of Connor McDavid, who needed 559.
Utah’s Logan Cooley had a hat trick and scored on the Mammoth’s first shot. He added a second goal about nine minutes into the game to make it 2-0. Montreal captain Nick Suzuki, back after missing six games with a left-hand injury, cut the deficit with a goal at 15:25 of the first period, finishing a cross-ice pass from Juraj Slafkovsky. Arber Xhekaj tied it at 17:10 with a slap shot clocked at 156.46 km/h, the hardest shot to produce a goal in the NHL this season.
Utah went ahead again, and Kirby Dach tied it 3-3 on the power play 69 seconds into the third period. The Mammoth moved back in front 4-3 before Adam Engstrom, playing his 25th NHL game, scored his first NHL goal from the slot with about five minutes left in regulation to make it 4-4.
Suzuki finished with a goal and two assists, including one on the winner. The Canadiens outshot Utah 35-20, and goaltender Jakub Dobes stopped 16 shots.
Head coach Martin St. Louis said the Canadiens’ response was a product of Tuesday’s disappointment. “Sometimes things happen, not by chance,” he said.
Montreal had lost 5-4 in overtime to Winnipeg on Tuesday after giving up four goals in the final 2:39 of regulation, the latest four-goal comeback in NHL history. Our report on that game has the details.
Utah’s power play, the NHL’s best, scored three times on five chances. The Mammoth are now 23-for-60 with the man advantage this season, a rate of 38.3 per cent.
Engstrom said Xhekaj, his defence partner, had predicted before every game that he would score. “Now he finally got it right,” Engstrom said.
The Canadiens, who improved to 10-3-3, visit the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday.
